fensterbau/frontale 2006 in Review
“Wilkommen zur messe” is German for “welcome to the show.” More than 100,762 visitors were made to feel welcome to Nuremberg, Germany, March 22-25, for fensterbau/frontale 2006-a record number of attendees for the biannual trade show. The international show filled the Exhibition Centre Nuremberg with 1,184 exhibitors from 30 countries showcasing products and services for woodworking, fenestration and facades.
According to show organizers, the number of attendees grew by 9 percent over the previous event in 2004. The total display space was around 6 percent larger than two years ago. In addition, organizers say that larger shares of attendees than in previous years were international.
“It was nice to see the number of people that were attending from North America,” says Jeff Shilakis, president of Hoppe. “Several of the largest door and window fabricators were there and it was obvious that they were just trying to see what was applicable in the way of technology that could be applied to make the products in North America just that much better.”
Representatives of the Roto AG group from around the globe—including North America, Germany, China and Russia-were among some of the international representatives.
Roto AG used the show as a launching pad for a number of new products, including the Roto E-Tec Drive™ concealed electronic window drive unit, the NT Designo™ concealed tilt and turn hardware and the DoorSafe Tandeo™ automatic three-point door locking system.
“Fensterbau was ... a great opportunity for us to strengthen relationships with our customers and share with them the latest European fenestration trends and technological advancements, some of which they may be able to apply in their own business,” says Gregory Koch, president and chief executive officer of Roto Frank of America.
Hoppe showcased several products that Shilakis says are unique to the European market. One is a patented device that allows the owners of tilt and turn windows to determine whether their windows are open or tilted.
The device proves useful, as one example, in telling homeowners getting ready to go to bed if all of their sliding doors or windows are closed on the perimeter of the house. Another feature at the show was the company’s Monte Carlo collection of hardware, designed by the Italian Giugiaro design group.
“Those products are typically unique to the European market but we are exploring if there is interest in possibly bring them or variants of those items into the North American market,” says Shilakis.
From his perusal of the show floor, one technology jumped out at Larry Johnson, executive vice president of Edgetech IG Inc. of Cambridge, Ohio.
“One thing that we saw that was a little bit different is that everybody’s promoting this sealed-frame technology,” Johnson says.
The technology that caught Johnson’s eye was featured at the stands of both Veka and Rehau.
“It’s a way of sealing the IG into the sash of either a door or window, and it gives you a lot more structural ability, and reduces the need for any additional reinforcements.”
As far as its own booth, Johnson says that Edgetech found the show successful in promoting its Super Spacer TriSeal spacer and the Gasglass handheld the company is now distributing.
“This was the first year that we actually had a booth there. From what I understand from our German colleagues, our product is becoming more well-known over there ... all in all, it was successful in that aspect.”
In fact, the company was awarded one of the first “Architektur Fenster Fassade” innovation prizes. The company took first place in the “products of high architectural quality” category with its Super Spacer TriSeal spacer.
The contest was sponsored by the architecture journals “xia IntelligenteArchitektur” and “AIT,” in cooperation with NürnbergMesse GmbH. The competition was initiated in order to acknowledge those outer shell solutions that particularly meet the needs of architects, according to information from Edgetech. It was intended to highlight the importance of architectural quality as the basis for market success. The jury was made up of independent architects from Nuremberg, Munich and Stuttgart.
The most challenging part of the competition, according to Edgetech, was in displaying the spacer: it had to be presented in such a way that it could bear comparison with other more “graphic” products. To this end Edgetech was assisted by Hero-Glas from Dersum in Emsland. Hero-Glas is known for its complex glass constructions, such as curved insulation glass. In order to tangibly demonstrate the flexibility of SuperSpacer® TriSeal™, Hero-Glas designed a 3D sail made of insulation glass, thus transforming a spacer into an actual object.
The jury concluded: “The particularly flexible spacer means that heat insulated panes can be used in curves of virtually any shape. This offers a simple method of creating forms which were more technically complex and required more material in conventional production. As a result, it is now much easier to produce free translucent forms in construction.”
“We are delighted to have been awarded the innovation prize, especially as it means that the advantages and added value of our flexible SuperSpacer TriSeal spacer have now also been recognized and acknowledged by architects,” says Torsten Keemss, managing director of Edgetech Europe.
Shilakis also concluded that the event had been a success.
“I thought last time the show was extremely well-attended and I felt that this year there were at least as many people, possibly more so,” he says. “The reason I think this was successful is because the economy in Germany has been quite low for quite some time and, at this point, it seems to be at least buoying up bits, as indicated by the number of people who were extremely interested in products.”
The next fensterbau/frontale show will take place in the Exhibition Centre Nuremberg, April 2-5, 2008.

Recycling PVC Profiles
Hamos GmbH of Penzberg, Germany, offers equipment for separating recyclable PVC window profiles.
The PVC window profiles are first shredded into regrind, from which dust is then removed. The material is then largely freed of rubber and other contaminants by an EKS type of electrostatic separation equipment. The different electrostatic charge of rigid PVC compared with rubber and other substances is used. The PVC has purity of approximately 99.5 percent after this stage of separation, according to the company.
Next, SEA optoelectric color sorting equipment separates the rubber and possible color contamination from the material, so that the PVC material has purity of more than 99.995 percent.
HOMAG Extends its Venture Series
The HOMAG Group AG of Schopfloch, Germany, has extended its Venture series. The company’s new CNC processing centers, Venture 12 L and Venture 12 XL, feature a complete window construction equipment package. Alongside a high-powered trimming spindle for processing work pieces up to 200 mm in height and a 30-slot tool changer, an upgrade for five-axis processing can be added at any time. According to information from the company, the centers help increase end product variety.
