McDonald's Former CEO Joins Dwyer Group
Burton D. Cohen, retired senior vice president and chief franchising officer for McDonald's Corp., has been elected to the board of directors for the Dwyer Group, the parent company of Glass Doctor.
"Burt, whose business and legal expertise resulted in one of the most respected careers in the world of franchising, will be invaluable to the Dwyer Group as we move forward in our national and international expansion," said Dina Dwyer-Owens, president and chief executive officer of the Dwyer Group.
Cohen replaces outgoing board member Jim Sirbaku, chief executive officer of Profiles International Inc., who has resigned from the Dwyer Group board of directors.
Gorell Names Felton IT Manager
Gorell Windows & Doors of Indiana, Pa., has named Greg Felton as its information technology (IT) manager. In his new position, Felton will be responsible for the daily operations of the IT department and the current implementation of a new business and manufacturing control system.
Before joining Gorell, Felton worked at Haskell Senator International, a manufacturer of office furniture. He holds a bachelor's degree in computer science from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Sika Appoints Smith Director of Marketing
The Sika Industry Group of Madison Heights, Mich., has announced the appointment of Ron Smith to the newly created position of director of marketing. Smith will be responsible for directing and managing the marketing and advertising activities of the industry group.
Sanders Named World’s Top Tinter
Danny Sanders of Atlantic Sun Control in Atlanta recently won the first International Tint-Off, held in conjunction with the Third Annual International Window Film Conference and Expo™ in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., April 18-20. Both events were sponsored by window film magazine, USGlass' sister publication, and the International Window Film Association.
Sanders took first in the competition of 33 contestants and went home with a 4-foot trophy, custom leather jacket and $1,000 cash prize.
Harmon Appoints Smith Renovation Champion
Minneapolis-based Harmon Inc. has named Jeff Smith as renovation champion at its Cincinnati office. In his new role, Smith will be responsible for introducing the renovation business unit to building owners, property managers and renovation contractors in Cincinnati, Dayton, Ohio, and Columbus, Ohio.
Kierner Becomes Banta Corp. CFO
The Banta Corp. recently announced the appointment of Daniel W. Kierner to the position of vice president and chief financial officer (CFO). Most recently, Kierner served as treasurer of Pittsburgh-based PPG Industries.
He succeeds current CFO Gerald A. Henseler, who recently announced his retirement.
Ziegler Participates in Defense Dept. Conference
Thad Ziegler, founder and owner of Thad Ziegler Glass in San Antonio, Texas, participated in the Defense Department's Joint Civilian Orientation Conference (JCOC 65), at the invitation of Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. The program was designed to give participants the opportunity to learn first-hand about U.S. military personnel, their equipment and capabilities and national defense strategies.
Ziegler currently serves as liaison for the Military Affairs Council of the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce to the Commander of the 37th Training Wing's Commander at Lackland Air Force Base. He is also former chairperson of the San Antonio Air Force Community Council.

NFPA Board Appoints Chair, Three Members to Standards Council; Names Shannon CEO
The board of directors of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recently elected James M. Shannon president and chief executive officer of the NFPA. Shannon succeeds George D. Miller, who is retiring after ten years with the association.
Shannon has served as NFPA senior vice president and general counsel since 1991.
In addition, the board has appointed Philip J. DiNenno, P.E. of Baltimore, to a three-year term as chair of the association's standards council. Also appointed as new members to the body are Rick Breezee of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; John C. Stevenson of San Diego; and Peter J. Gore Willse of Portland, Conn.
All appointments were effective January 1, 2002.
DiNenno, who replaces Gary M. Taylor of Willowdale, Ontario, previously served as a member of the standards council until December 2000, when his term expired.
A fire protection engineer, DiNenno is president of Hughes Associates Inc. and is responsible for execution of fire protection designs and development projects. Breezee is a building official for the Metropolitan Airports Commission in Minneapolis and teaches building codes courses at Minnesota state colleges and universities. Stevenson, an architectural consultant, serves on the board of architectural examiners for California. Willse, a civil engineer, is a research consultant with HSB Industrial Risk Insurers in Connecticut and previously conducted loss investigations globally.
The standards council comprises 13 individuals from a broad range of appropriate interests, and administers NFPA's consensus codes and standards development activities, including issuance of documents. The panel works to assure that due process and fairness are upheld throughout the creation or revision of all NFPA codes and standards.
New Board Officers and Directors Elected for BOCA
The Building Officials Code Administrators International (BOCA) has elected new officers and directors to serve on its board.
James (Tim) T. Ryan, C.B.O., codes administrator, of Overland Park, Kan., was elected president. He has served on BOCA's board since 1993.
Steven I. Shapiro, C.B.O., director of codes compliance from Hampton, Va., will serve as vice president. He has served on the BOCA board since 1994.
Judson Collins, C.B.O., programs manager for the Health Facilities Plan Review, Oklahoma State Health Department, was elected secretary/treasurer.
Elected directors were: Majed A. Dabdoub, P.E., senior building plans examiner and analyst from Cincinnati; Donald F. Plass, M.C.O., administrative director of code enforcement in Hoffman Estates, Ill.; and Robert G. Blanton, A.I.C.P. and C.B.O., director of planning and community development, for the city of Winchester and Clark County, Ky.
Re-elected directors were: Kenneth W. Andrews, C.B.O., code enforcement officer in Hookset, N.H.; Ronald E. Estepp, C.B.O., construction official in Hillsborough Township, N.J.; and Wayne R. Jewell, C.B.O., building official in Southfield, Mich.
Directors serving a second year of a current term are: Edwin M. Berkel, C.F.I., fire marshal, Mehlville Fire Protection District in St. Louis; William R. Bryant, M.C.O., inspection services administrator in Anne Arundel County, Md.; Cindy L. Davis, C.B.O., building official zoning officer of O'Hara Township, Pa.; William D. Dupler, building official in Chesterfield, Va.; John M. Gibson Jr., M.C.O., director, Department of Permits and Inspections, Frederick, Md.; Steven P. ASA Elects Officers
The American Subcontractors Association (ASA) has elected its officers for the 2001-2002 term. They are: Gerry Martin, Ceco Concrete Construction LLC, Kansas City, Mo., president; Anne Bigane Wilson, Bigane Paving Co., Chicago, vice president; Richard Wanner, Wanner Metal Worx Inc., Delaware, Ohio, treasurer; and Mat Glover, Glover Masonry Associates Inc., Arvada, Colo., secretary.
Kirkwood Glass Founder Dies
The founder of Kirkwood Glass Co. in St. Louis, Charlie W. Schneider Jr., died Sunday, April 21, of Waldenstrom's macroglobulinmia, a rare blood cancer. In 1964 Schneider founded the company, which handled both flat and auto glass.
"He was a very forthright, honest businessman," said his daughter, Carol Raleigh of Wildwood, Mo. "He was a very highly respected man in the community."
Schneider was 78.
Colorado Steel Sash Owner Dies
Steven W. MacDonald, the owner and operator of Colorado Steel Sash, died April 26 after a battle with cancer. He is survived by his mother Ruth; sister Nancy; nieces Kristen, Janelle and Amy; great nephews Isaiah and Johnathan; great niece Jillianne.
IWCA Presents Two Awards
The International Window Cleaning Association (IWCA) headquartered in Alexandria, Va., presented awards to some of its members January 12 during its annual convention in Reno, Nev.
Mike and Diane Smahlik, owners of Ettore Products Co. of Oakland, Calif., were presented the IWCA's Lifetime Achievement Award. According to the IWCA, the award recognizes the Smahliks' service and dedication to the window cleaning industry.
In addition, the Ettore Award was presented to Stefan Bright, the IWCA's safety director, and Tom McGrath, owner of Scotties Building Services Inc. in Apex, N.C. This award recognizes extraordinary service to the IWCA, according to the association.
