Thomas Mitchell president of Messe Düsseldorf North America
This month glasstec will take place for the 19th time in Düsseldorf, Germany. Held every other year, this year, Messe Düsseldorf North America (MDNA) also brings a new president, Thomas Mitchell, who shared with USGlass some of his thoughts about glasstec, how it’s different from other trade shows and its future.
Tell me a bit about your background and experience.
I have been with MDNA for more than 13 years in different positions. I started in exhibit sales; I opened an office in New York in 1996 and then folded all of our operations into the one office in Chicago at the end of 1998.
What do you like most about glasstec; what’s your least favorite aspect?
I like the interaction of seeing everyone in the entire glass family come together. glasstec has every type of glass, bringing all aspects of the industry together. And it is rewarding to see everyone like that. What I don’t like … it would be nice to see more American people there.
What do you think is the biggest misconception about glasstec among U.S. citizens?
That they think it’s too big to see everything in five days, so maybe they can’t benefit from it. Yes, it’s big, but you can benefit from being there regardless of how [big or small] a company may be; it’s a show that serves everyone.
What’s unique about glasstec?
What you find, compared to other shows, is that glasstec focuses on the entire industry and not just one portion of it.
How will this year’s event be different than years past?
We will have a new architectural seminar; our goal [with it] is to bring the builders, manufacturers and architects together and to give them dialogue and to talk and to see the benefits for them. Also, every year we have new, cutting-edge technology and this year there will be a big focus on solar technology, as well as LCD display glass.
