Guardian Adds EcoGuard® to Solar Glass
Guardian Industries in Auburn Hills, Mich., continues to build its line
of solar glass products with the introduction of two new low-iron float
glasses designed to maximize solar energy transmission.
EcoGuard® float glass is a solar energy solution for concentrating
solar power mirrors, photovoltaic (PV) energy systems, concentrating PV
systems and solar thermal applications. It offers optimal energy and light
transmission, is easy to process and is available in a variety of glass
thicknesses ranging from 0.95- to 12-mm. The new glass also is available
in several transmission ranges to meet the needs of a variety of applications.
EcoGuard pattern glass can be used in a variety of applications, including
PV energy systems, solar thermal collectors, greenhouses and other applications
requiring high solar transmission and light control. It offers advantages
in manufacturing and performance due to the its pattern uniformity and
solar transmission consistency. The glass also is IEC-validated and tested
and certified by the SPF Solartechnic Institute. The company currently
is producing matte/matte and matte/prismatic pattern glasses, and is conducting
research to further increase solar transmission by optimizing the textured

Atlanta-based Southern Aluminum Finishing Co. Inc. (SAF) has announced
that it now has available aluminum extrusions, sheet and services for
designers, installers and manufacturers of renewable energy equipment
and support structures.
According to a REN21 Renewables Global Status Report released this spring,
most sectors of the renewable energy market have increased by double digits
despite a global economic crisis.
Solarlux Puts Fenzi Group to Work for
FENZI SpA in Tribiano (Milano), Italy, has created not only a new Solar
Coatings division dedicated to developing innovative technologies for
solar energy, but also a new complete line of paints for solar mirrors:
Designed to make the most out of new technologies for solar thermal plants,
the company reports that its new line of paints meets the highest durability
and resistance standards. The paints provide long-term protection for
solar mirrors that are located primarily in desert areas, and constantly
exposed to corrosion by sand, wind, temperature fluctuations and salt
aggression. The Solarlux paints feature chemical resistance to corrosion
and UV radiation, top performance under thermal and environmental stress
and abrasion resistance.
Solarlux paints have been designed and produced to meet a wide variety
of needs, with different chemical compositions and application methods,
and can thus be used in all solar thermal plant systems: parabolic mirrors,
disk systems, tower systems, etc. In fact, these paints are produced in
different versions: for copper and copper-free mirrors; in lead-free or
low-lead versions; and for different application systems, including two-coat
(base + top) or three-coat (base + intermediate + top).
PPG Introduces Solarphire PV and AR
Solarphire AR (anti-reflective) glass from Pittsburgh-based PPG Industries
was engineered to maximize solar energy transmission to solar-collecting
photovoltaic (PV) cells. Solarphire AR glass is formulated with a proprietary
anti-reflective coating that facilitates the efficient conversion of solar
light into energy. In 3.2-millimeter thicknesses, Solarphire AR glass
yields a solar-weighted transmittance of more than 93 percent.
The company also has introduced Solarphire PV glass to maximize solar
energy transmission for PV modules. Because of its clarity, Solarphire
PV glass delivers enhanced transmittance in the ultraviolet/visible portion
of the solar spectrum, between 350 and 1,100 nanometers, where crystalline
PV cells are most responsive to the sunís energy. This clarity is the
result of a proprietary glass formulation that, the company says, allows
Solarphire PV glass to transmit more solar energy than competitive products,
which increases the energy efficiency of solar cells.
