It's Show Time!

A Preview of the National Auto Glass Conference, 
NACE and SEMA Shows

The leaves are changing colors and most school-age children are back in school. Autumn has arrived and with it, a busy season for everyone—including the auto glass industry. While the children deal with new classes, new clothes, new teachers and new books, the grown-ups are looking forward to new faces, new products, and new venues for trade shows, particularly the National Auto Glass Conference, International Autobody Congress and Exposition (NACE) and Specialty Equipment Market Association’s (SEMA). If you’re planning to attend one or all of these shows, here’s what you need to know about each before you arrive.

National Auto Glass Conference
September 9-11, 2004
Tampa, Fla.

While the rest of the country is pulling out the long pants and jackets, some members of the auto glass industry may consider taking their swimsuits with them one last time as they head to Tampa, Fla., the site of the National Auto Glass Confer-ence & Expo 2004. The show will be held at the Tampa Marriott Waterside and Marina September 9-11.

Attendees to the Show have the opportunity to play the greens at the Tournament Players Club Tampa Bay as part of the golf tournament, which includes prizes sponsored by Equalizer Inc.

Lots to Do
The golf tournament on Thursday, Sept. 9th serves as the opening event, with seminars starting that afternoon. Keynote speaker Steve Rizzo, a motivational humorist, will take the stage that afternoon to share techniques to help audience members utilize humor as a way to control negativity and reduce stress. A welcoming cocktail reception will provide networking opportunities following Rizzo’s presentation.

The morning of Friday, September 10, features several seminars ranging in topic from AGR overhead costs and how to manage them, to successful and affordable advertising.

Jeff Bull of Bull Associates and Leo Cyr of NGA are scheduled to present a seminar that day as well, titled Rewards of Professionalism. Bull will focus on AGRSS and its newly-expanded registration program.
The evening caps off with four hours of trade show starting at 3 o’clock with more than 50 companies scheduled to exhibit.

Saturday offers as much by way of seminars and show, but is structured differently to maximize attendee time and attention span. Chuck Lloyd of the law firm Livgard & Rabuse opens the day with his seminar on collections and how to get paid for jobs you do. This is the same topic Lloyd discussed at the IGA Convention earlier this year (see AGRR July/August, p. 32).

Breaking up the day are an auto glass installation demonstration and three hours of trade show open to attendees to visit anyone they missed the previous day, before returning to the seminars, which resume with representatives of Mitchell International explaining the new National Auto Glass Specifications (NAGS) rebalancing and answer questions. Currently scheduled to follow the Mitchell/-NAGS seminar are members of the Chicago Group discussing their alternative pricing plan for the industry. Both seminars are also repeats, having previously been presented at the IGA Convention.

The Conference will close with the Auto Glass Conference Wrap-Up, which the association says gives attendees the chance to ask questions of NAGS, the Chicago Group and NGA.

Lots to See
Attendees will have more time to visit booths such as Gold Glass Group Corp. of Bohemia, N.Y., which has introduced its most recent addition to the Gold Glass (moulding) line, the T202, and added a line of premium blue masking tape and will be bringing both to the show this year at Booth 102. The T202, closed cell foam moulding, is an underside profile designed for exposed edge glass applications that involve tight radius corners. Sold as 100 ft. rolls, the T202 is designed specifically to replace damaged moulding on quarter and back glass pieces that have tight radius instead of replacing the whole lite.

The masking tapes are UV-resistant to ultraviolet light and designed not to leave a residue on the car. Individually wrapped rolls are 60 yards long and available in 4 widths (Info+ call 800/448-5188 or visit

Shat-R-Proof Corp. of Savage, MN, will be in Booth 422 debuting its new SRP Velocity™ adhesive. The SRP Velocity is a single component adhesive that, according to a company press release, features a one-hour safe drive away time at temperatures as low as 0°F (-17°C). The SRP Velocity features the safety and reliability that SRP Totalseal adhesives are known for.

“You can’t control the weather,” says Keith Beveridge, vice president and general manager of Shat-R-Proof Corp. “But you can do the next best thing by using the SRP Velocity. It is a leap forward for the SRP Totalseal line of autoglass adhesives.” (Info call 952/946-0450)

Equalizer Industries will be at the show, this year debuting its Equalizer® Store, a point-of-sale (POS) sales tool on a national scale from Booth 107. Designed for improving Equal-izer® authorized distributor’s will-call or counter sales, the Equalizer Store is a high-profile, lockable, see-through cabinet. C.R. Laurence will be in Booth 201 with new sliding windows for 2005 pick-up trucks. The Los Angeles-based company is introducing additions to its truck slider line, including CRL Manual and POWR-Sliders™ for 2005 models of the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon, Chevrolet Kodiak/GMC Topkick, Nissan Titan and Dodge Ram. Pilkington has reserved Booth 401 to exhibit its range of e-commerce, accessory and marketing lines, particularly focusing on two new products: Pilkington Branded Sliders and GlassConnect. The sliders are the newest Pilkington product offering and are made in the same manufacturing facility, under the same conditions as our OEM sliders. According to company representatives, the resulting parts are produced to the same standards as the original glass and are tested to ensure proper fit and quality. Pilkington Sliders are available for Ford, Chevy and Nissan vehicles and can be ordered from any Pilkington local service center.

Glass Connect is a desktop-based software application that allows users to check inventory, look-up parts and order on-line. Pilkington is promoting the program as one that provides customers with another e-Business alternative to ensure that they can quote jobs quickly, easily and accurately. (Info+ call 614/497-5966)
Pilkington is not the only company with computer software to aid the auto glass industry attending the conference; Mainstreet Computers Inc. will be there, as well, in Booth 501, promoting Glas-Avenue 7.0, the newest version of its software. Evolving from customer feedback, approximately 100 different changes were made to the program and the new version is said to be more user friendly than the last, with a new server and fewer screens to maneuver. To facilitate use, the work order window is accessible on every screen, allowing users to retain use of the function without having to leave the current page of activity. The glass and pricing tabs are no longer separate sections and live happily together now on one screen.

The new program is analogized by one customer as being “like an eight-lane interstate: fast, easy and everything is at your fingertips,” a description Mainstreet is glad to promote. The new program requires at least Windows 98 and a 350 MHz Pentium based processor or higher to run. (Info call 800/698-6246)

Also joining the computer software, electronic claims processing foray is PPG Industries, which will use Booth 101 to promote PowerSync™, a LYNX Services® recognition program. Program participants are provided with a CD-rom tool kit that includes information and materials such as a recognition certificate, informational leave-behind, news release template and guidelines for using the program tools. According to the company, the program allows participants seamless claims processing, faster approvals and processing and improved shop efficiency. (Info e-mail

Over in Booth 104 will be A.N. Designs, exhibiting its full line of UltraWiz auto glass removal tools. This year, however, the 3007-K lever knife will be more prominent and accessible to attendees. Introduced as a conceptual model last year, the 3007-K has been on the market officially since the beginning of 2004. 
“They’re on the market now and ready to sell,” said Bob Nilson of A.N. Designs. 

Now that they’re available and some are out on the market, the National Auto Glass Conference will be a second debut, of sorts, and a chance for the company to get feedback from those customers who already have the tool in use. (Info call 866/482-2921)

NACE 2004

NASCAR. Whatever the stereotypes about those who watch it, it has become an undeniable force this year. Political candidates are not the only people courting the “NASCAR Dad,” frequently defined as a working-class man, but it appears so is the auto glass industry. Visteon has become the official licensed producer of NASCAR brand OEM windshield glass and who has been named the keynote speaker at NACE Expo 2004? None other than NASCAR legend Kyle Petty.

Start Your Engines
The International Autobody Congress and Exposition (NACE) will be held November 3-6, 2004 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas and Petty will take the podium on Thursday the 4th at the Opening General Session.

Other speakers at this year’s NACE show include Richard Flint of Richard Flint Seminars, who will speak at Friday’s luncheon about goals, dreams and living a successful lifestyle and Jim Morris, the schoolteacher who went on to become a professional baseball player and inspired the movie “The Rookie.” Morris will address the crowd at Friday’s General Session as the keynote speaker.

If the anticipated turnout is accurate, more than 35,000 visitors will attend the show.

The educational conference series has been expanded this year to include two new tracks – Sales and Marketing and Estimating – and new 45-minute crash-course sessions in several different tracks. Other seminar topics offered include management and vehicle repair, and each topic is offered in the 45-minute introductory course as well as a 90-minute session or a 3-hour seminar, for those with particular interests or seeking varying degrees of information. The conference program begins on Wednesday, November 3 with the trade-show and exhibition opening the following day.

Fueling Up
Of particular interest to the AGR crowd will be two seminars offered the morning of November 3rd (Wednesday) are the auto glass replacement and repair for insurers seminar and the stationary glass. The replacement and repair for insurers seminar will be moderated by Al Ferrie, training services manager for the automotive aftermarket alliance of PPG /PROSTARS and Jody Bartell, manager of continuing education at PPG/Prostars, whose discussion will include Federal Motor Safety Standards that relate to proper auto glass installation, the role of auto glass in the vehicle’s safety system and the differences between repair versus replacement. The moderators for the stationary glass seminar have yet to be announced, but according to the seminar description, stationary glass issues to be covered include windshields, pinchweld preparation, adhesives and glass repair.

Both seminars are four-hours long and run from 8 a.m.-noon, though the repair and replacement seminar is offered again on Friday.

Who’s On the Pole?
When NACE attendees aren’t being inspired by the likes of Petty, Flint and Morris, there will be plenty to see, with more than 500 exhibitors expected to be at the show including Metairie, La.’s Diamondite, showing-off it’s Speed Clay cleaner at Booth 5018. A spray-on foaming clay compound that provides hybrid mechanical and chemical cleaning, Speed Clay is marketed as removing bonded contamination from any painted, plated or fiberglass surface without using abrasives found in traditional compounds. Formulated to be used manually, Speed Clay does not require the use of polishers, etc., and requires no special training or expertise results, according to the company.

Glas-Weld Systems Inc. will make the trek from Bend, Ore., to Las Vegas to exhibit its glass restoration and windshield repair products in Booth 5472.

San Diego-based Mitchell International will has Booth 6046 to promote its data and software solutions, including its customer satisfaction indexing (CSI) service, Autochex. AutocheX interviews more than 35,000 vehicle owners every month and measures the customer satisfaction with the claims process, collecting information on the customer’s experience with the insurance company and collision repair facility. Insurers and shops use AutocheX results to monitor and improve customer satisfaction, to retain and attract new customers, and to increase profitability. AutocheX also measures customer satisfaction auto glass repair shops.

Sika and AEGIS also will be on hand in Booths 7438 and 7631, respectively, as will Dow’s subsidiary, Essex, in Booth 3617.

SEMA 2004
November 2-5, 2004
Las Vegas

If going to Las Vegas to attend a trade show isn’t enough for you, how about going to two shows? The SEMA show is running concurrently with NACE as part of the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Week. The venues are different, with SEMA being held at the Los Vegas Convention Center, but to ensure that neither show loses out on potential visitors, a complimentary shuttle service will run between the two events.

The shuttle should prove busy, if SEMA’s anticipated crowd of 100,000 attendants also want to see everything at NACE, which they very well might as the shows explore vast and vastly different ends of the automotive aftermarket spectrum.

Wear Comfortable Shoes
While NACE concentrates on collision repair, SEMA is for the decorative-mind. Exhibitors are arranged according to market segments, of which there are 12. That said, however, doesn’t mean there isn’t room for the windshield repair and replacement business. The 12 market segments are: Business Services, Car Care and Accessories, Mobile Electronics and Technology, Performance Marine, Performance Tires and Wheels, Racing and Performance, Restoration Market-place, Restyling and Accessories, Hot Rod Alley, Tools and Equipment, Trucks, SUVs and Off-Road, and Vehicle Manufacturer (OEM).

Familiar names will be at the show. Delta Kits will be exhibiting under the Tools and Equipment category, in Booth 12738; Equalizer Industries will be in Booth 13160 in the Car Care and Accessories category and C. R. Laurence joins the masses in the SUVs and Off-Road exhibitors in Booth 3937.

Resting Your Feet
Though booths abound—9,000 have been reserved—SEMA also offers an array of educational opportunities. An average of 13 seminars are offered per day, with seminar topics ranging from leadership and management to customer service and workplace stress. The seminars generally run an 1½ hour each and, as a whole, run the full day.

A Full Fall Season
The Auto Glass Conference, NACE and SEMA are, of course, not the only industry-related trade shows this fall. There are many regional shows to be had, including Glass TEXpo 2004 and Glass Expo Midwest, but no matter which show you attend – be it one, two or all of them – there will be plenty to see, plenty to do and plenty of people to meet.
