Schield Family Acquires The Peachtree Companies Inc.
The Schield family, also known as TPC Acquisition Inc., owners of Medford, Wis.-based Weather Shield Manufacturing Inc., has purchased SNE Enterprises Inc. and Peachtree Doors and Windows Inc. (collectively, The Peachtree Companies Inc.) from Nortek Inc. Lee, Kevin and Mark Schield founded Weather Shield, along with TPC Acquisition, their own purchasing company. The terms of this purchase were not disclosed.

The Peachtree Com-panies and Weather Shield Manufacturing will operate as two independent organizations, sharing some administrative and executive functions but retaining independent brands, sales forces and distribution channels, according to a press release issued by the Schield family. Together, the companies will employ approximately 5,400 people. Bob Schoofs, general manager of Weather Shield, will now also serve as chief executive officer of The Peachtree Companies. Robert C. MacDonald will continue to serve as president of The Peachtree Companies.

“Acquiring Peachtree represents an excellent opportunity to target unique market segments outside of the Weather Shield brand’s core strength,” said Mark Schield, vice president of Weather Shield and co-owner of TPC Acquisition Inc. “We’ve become successful by taking a hands-on approach to the business. By utilizing our family’s expertise in manufacturing, marketing and sales, we believe we can quickly establish a foundation for long-term profitability.”

Mikron Expands to Seattle
Mikron Industries of Kent, Wash., has opened a new 52,000-square-foot facility in the Seattle area. According to the company, the plant will be devoted to polymer composite markets, in an effort to support MikronWood interior window covering and exterior decking customers.

MikronWood, one of the company’s latest launches, is designed to offer a cost-effective, high-performance, low-maintenance alternative to traditional wood use. Mikron currently operates plants and research facilities in Washington, Illinois and Kentucky.

Buyout Group Purchases Farley Windows
Farley Windows of Alexandria, Ontario, and Massena, N.Y., has been acquired by a buyout group made up of NB Capital Partners of Toronto and Montreal and Cornerstone Partners of New York. The terms of the purchase were not disclosed.

“We are very pleased to be partnering with Farley Windows,” said Gilbert Palter, managing partner of NB Capital Partners. “Farley has experienced excellent growth and is a leader in utilizing manufacturing technology … Farley’s existing capabilities, coupled with the resources that each of Cornerstone and ourselves bring, will make Farley an excellent platform from which to build one of the leading North American manufacturers of vinyl windows.”

Alfred Olsen will continue to serve as managing director of Farley and Doug Underwood as director of finance. In addition, Peter Dyson and Matt Olivari were named directors of sales and marketing for Canada and the United States, respectively, and Denis Besner was named director of production.

VELUX America Receives “Golden Hammer Award”
VELUX America Inc. of Greenwood, S.C., has been named a third-time recipient of the 17th Annual Golden Hammer Award in Inventory Management by National Home Center News. 

According to the company, the award was based on its “excellence in strategic partnerships with building material retailers.” Award recipients were nominated and selected by a committee comprised of retail home center executives and editors of the National Home Center News. The awards cover 12 product categories in a variety of performance areas and are presented to companies that excel in effective supplier/retailer partnerships.

“VELUX is dedicated to serving the unique needs of the professionally oriented dealers and as a Golden Hammer Award recipient, our industry leadership is undisputed for a third year,” said Tim Miller, president of the company.

PPG Demonstrates Self-Cleaning Glass at Custom Home Show

 To demonstrate its SunClean™ self-cleaning glass, Pittsburgh’s PPG Industries adorned a Baltimore home with the windows for display during the 2001 Custom Home Show. “We chose to demonstrate our glass in a real-world setting so that its two consumer-valued benefits would be evident,” said Barry J. McGee, vice president for flat glass products. “SunClean self-cleaning glass is easier to clean than conventional glass and stays clean longer, so homeowners can spend less time cleaning and enjoying a clearer view.”

According to PPG, a durable transparent coating helps break down and loosen dirt, so that rain or a spray from a hose will rinse the window clean. PPG also says the sheeting action provides minimal spotting.

In addition, PPG announced that Thermal Industries, also of Pittsburgh, will be the first distributor of its SunClean self-cleaning glass, and will have it available beginning next spring. Thermal Industries will offer SunClean in a wide range of residential product windows such as double-hung, casement, sliding, bow and bay windows and patio doors and enclosure systems. PPG announced the partnership at a press conference in late September at a home in downtown Baltimore, where it installed its SunClean glass for the first time.

“Window customers demand high-performance windows,” said David Rascoe, president of Thermal Industries. “We always look to offer our customers the very best in window and glass technology. “This latest glass innovation will allow us to meet homeowners’ increasing needs for a low-maintenance lifestyle.”

“Our research shows that SunClean self-cleaning glass will be in demand by homeowners,” said Patrick J. Kenny, PPG flat glass products director of marketing. “Our agreement with Thermal Industries will allow us to meet that demand by offering the product through a long-established major window manufacturer with a wide reach.”

Thermal Industries also manufactured and installed the windows in the Baltimore showcase home. The announcement of SunClean comes on the heels of Pilkington’s announcement of its own self-cleaning glass on June 26 (see Fall 2001 Door & Window Maker, page 73, for related story).

BHMA Chooses ETL SEMKO for Continuous Hinges Program 
The Builders Hardware Manu-facturers Association (BHMA) has selected ETL SEMKO, America’s division of Intertek Testing Services, to serve as its independent, third-party testing, verification and auditing laboratory for its new continuous hinges certification program. Hardware manufacturers will now submit their products to ITS ETL SEMKO, which is based in Boxborough, Mass., for evaluation to the program’s criteria—ANSI/BHMA A156.26-2000. Products that comply with the program’s requirements will bear the BHMA mark.

Performance criteria used in these evaluations includes hinge play, accelerated cycling, abuse, vertical and lateral wear, overload and pin rise.

Market Continues to Grow
The Freedonia Group recently completed a study that revealed the demand for and shipment of windows and doors in the United States is expected to grow 2 percent annually through 2005. The demand for vinyl and other plastic windows and doors is expected to grow even more quickly, by almost six percent annually, because of its strength in the residential market. In 2000, the window and door market generated $21.6 billion, split among metal (44 percent), wood (41 percent) and plastic (15 percent).

Shade Company Claims Windows Cannot Retain Heat 
The Warm Co. (a manufacturer of window shades) of Seattle, Wash. recently issued a statement concerning insulating window coverings. In the release, the company informs consumers that insulating window coverings that are effectively sealed to the window frame on all sides “can substantially reduce window heat loss making rooms more comfortable while saving costly heating energy.” 

Even with insulating glass windows, the company claims that the windows could still be made warmer using fabric-covered insulated window coverings, which can be made using various types of material for installation. In addition, the company says this will reduce condensation.

“An average home can lose 30 percent or more of its heating energy through its windows, even if double-pane glass or storm windows are installed,” said Jim Chumbley of the Warm Co. “If the walls and ceiling of a home have been well-insulated, the windows could account for more than half of total heat loss.”

The new alliance will specialize in machinery for the solid wood industries of fenestration and stair-building … Hardware Technologies Ltd. of Fort Atkinson, Wis., has added SeVan Sales Inc. and KIDCO to its manufacturers representatives group. SeVan Sales Inc. will represent the states of California, Arizona and Nevada. KIDCO will cover the states of Texas, Missouri, Arkansas and Alabama ... Zero International Inc. of Bronx, N.Y., has appointed Door Control Consultants of Pickerington, Ohio, as its sales agency for Ohio, West Virginia and Northern Kentucky.
