WDMA Opens Up
New Leader, Heightened Focus
The Right Fit for the Industry

As the guest columnist in this space reserved for the Window and Door Manufacturers Association (WDMA) president, it is my pleasure to introduce the new leader of our organization, Joel Hoiland.

The Right Background
Hoiland’s credentials in association management run deep, and he has experience growing and branding trade associations. He carries a broad knowledge of business management, particularly in the manufacturing and construction sectors. In short, Hoiland has practically done it all for trade associations– hired staff, built websites and communications, enhanced finances and grown membership and related service programs.

Most recently, he served as president and chief executive officer of the International Warehouse Logistics Association in Chicago, a multi-million-dollar supply chain logistics organization and captive insurance company. There, among his myriad duties reporting to the chairperson of the board of directors, he re-branded the organization, following its charter to rebuild/reposition the association. In five year’s time he increased the net worth of the organization without raising dues, expanded membership benefits and spearheaded a historic alliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Association to implement worker safety programs. He also launched certification programs and conferences for information technology, marketing, sales, safety and risk. 

The Right Time
Hoiland also understands what drives the WDMA. 

“The most significant strengths I see in WDMA are the quality companies and people that comprise the membership, as well as the excellent platform to move the association to a higher level,” he said. 

These are critical times in the door, window and skylight industry, perfect for Hoiland to enter our organization. Our members need a strong representative organization in WDMA to act as a unified voice for the industry. We want our members to be able to offer the finest products, manufactured to exacting standards and beyond so they, in turn, can offer them to their customers.

As the new president, Hoiland will oversee and offer his extensive experience to many of the critical up and coming issues in the industry, including:

  • Positioning the organization as the technical leader in performance standards and as a representative of the WDMA’s diverse membership. 

  • Serving as a proactive leader and watchdog on issues such as window sill height restrictions, minimum window egress size and door threshold heights as well as energy standards and affordability.

  • Focusing on sustainability and green building, while giving members the tools they need to meet new LEED building practices and NAHB’s Model Green Home Building Guidelines.

  • Serving as an industry spokesperson on key code and legislative issues. Some of the issues of interest to members include modifications to energy code provisions; door and window installation and flashing requirements; passive versus active fire protection involving sprinkler protection versus area separation and fire-rated building construction; California formaldehyde emission regulations; and EPA lead abatement regulations.

  • Fostering innovation through the development and redevelopment of codes and standards that also recognize new materials, products and technologies; and that promote the value of superior performing products.

  • Eschewing the value of performance-based engineering rather than prescriptive standards as a method to encourage greater innovation.

  • Ongoing development of the Hallmark Certification Program for all product categories.
