ARAUCO Makes Key Acquisitions; Achieves FSC Certification
ARAUCO, a manufacturer of sustainable forest products, has signed an agreement to purchase Flakeboard, a manufacturer of panel products in the North American market. Flakeboard has seven production facilities throughout the United States and Canada that produce medium density fiberboard, particleboard and thermally fused melamine panels.

“This acquisition further highlights ARAUCO’s intent to grow our composite panel business and solidifies our commitment to be a leading supplier of sustainable, high-quality forest products to the North American market,” says Francisco Figueroa, ARAUCO-USA general manager. “We are very excited about the prospects ahead as we blend the talents and technology of ARAUCO-USA and Flakeboard. Our focus will continue to be on delivering industry-leading products to our customers.”

In January 2012, ARAUCO acquired an MDF and particleboard facility located in Moncure, N.C., which will be combined with Flakeboard’s existing mills and operate under the Flakeboard name. Kelly Shotbolt, president and CEO of Flakeboard, and his senior management team will combine and lead this company.

ARAUCO and Flakeboard are targeting a closing date during the second half of this year.

In addition, Arauco Panels USA LLC’s Moncure, N.C., facility has been issued an FSC chain of custody certificate by the Rainforest Alliance, which the company says provides independent, third-party verification that its facility is able to track FSC-certified material through its production process. The facility was also issued an FSC controlled wood certificate providing independent, third-party verification that it is in compliance with the FSC controlled wood standard, and is eligible to sell its non-FSC-certified wood products to other FSC CoC-certified manufacturers as “controlled wood.”

Arauco Wood Products Inc., the parent company of Arauco Panels USA LLC, also received its FSC chain of custody and controlled wood certification from Bureau Veratis.

Higuera Hardwoods Announces New Stocking Distribution Partner
Higuera Hardwoods LLC is now manufacturing and distributing Forestry Stewardship Certified bamboo products to the greater state of Michigan through Public Lumber Company. According to the company, this alliance combines the ecological benefits of a full line of bamboo with Public Lumber Company’s full-service millwork facility and lumberyard, which specializes in the stocking and manufacturing of exotic and domestic hardwood moldings and rough hardwood boards.

“We are elated to partner with an equally ecologically minded company such as Higuera Hardwoods,” says Craig Sarafa, CEO of Public Lumber Company. The combination of both of our product lines has a great synergy that will address the growing trend toward green building, decorating and LEED certification.”

Ponderosa Introduces Web-based Version of Ponderosa Product Configurator
Ponderosa Software announced the Ponderosa Online Product Configurator, a web-based version of its millwork configuration software which the company says will help millwork dealers increase revenues and improve customer service. This is possible by allowing their customers to design, view and configure their own doors and windows directly on the dealer’s website.

Accessible through any Internet browser, the tool uses an intuitive software wizard along with high-resolution images and detailed illustrations to present selection criteria for entry door systems, interior doors, windows, window units, stair parts and other customized products. Users select their desired options, each with rules or constraints to ensure that the options are compatible and can be ordered properly. Once the order has been submitted, the dealer can confirm specs and pricing with the customer, relieve inventory, schedule assembly time and track associated labor.

The product works in conjunction with the Ponderosa Millwork Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software and can be integrated with an electronic catalog and e-commerce software. In addition, the system enables dealers to maintain the data internally and add and change product information.

CertainTeed’s Exterior Trim Achieves GreenCircle Certification
CertainTeed Corp. achieved GreenCircle certification for its Restoration Millwork exterior trim. The third-party certification was conducted by GreenCircle Certified LLC, and the process included a comprehensive review of the manufacturing process and products, verifying the 21 percent recycled content of the product.

“Securing an independent third-party certification of the recycled content within our Restoration Millwork products reinforces our overarching commitment to environmental responsibility,” says Rick Brinton, marketing manager for Restoration Millwork at CertainTeed Siding Products Group.

In order to verify and certify recycled content claims, GreenCircle conducted a detailed evaluation of the Restoration Millwork product line and the company’s manufacturing operations in Social Circle, Ga. The claims were verified for conformance with International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14021 Environmental Labels and Declarations requirements, according to the announcement.
