Norman Shulman Dies at 74

Norman Shulman of Overland Park, KS, died September 30 of a long illness. He was 72.

Shulman, who had retired as vice president of sales for Guardian Industries, started Modern Manufacturing during the 1950s. Later, he founded Glass Guard Industries, one of the first companies in the northeast to manufacture tempered and insulating glass. Survivors include his wife, Gladys; four daughters and 14 grandchildren.

Martin Lerner Dies, owned Laminated Glass Corporation

Martin W. Lerner, owner of Laminated Glass Corporation, died on November 30, 1998 after a long illness. Lerner was a past president and active member of the Laminators Safety Glass Association. He is survived by his wife Angela Del Vecchio Lerner and his four children, Valerie Block, Michael Lerner, Steven Lerner and Dr. Robert Lerner. Allen "Red" Arndt Dead at 70

Allen "Red" Arndt founder of Red’s Auto Glass in Ferndale, MI, died on October 30, 1998. He was 70.

Arndt was a active member of the glass industry in Detroit. He is survived by his three children.


Voreis Named Vice President for United States Aluminum

United States Aluminum– Commercial Products Group of Waxahachie, TX, has named Richard D. Voreis executive vice president. Voreis has served as president and CEO of Hebel Building Systems in Atlanta, GA, and vice president of marketing and sales for Kawneer Company of Norcross, GA. In his new position, Voreis will be responsible for the Commercial Products Group, which has 16 operations throughout the United States and Canada.

AlliedSignal Gains New President

AlliedSignal Inc. has named Gary Cappeline president of AlliedSignal Specialty Chemicals of Morris Township, NJ. Cappeline, who was group vice president, pigments and additives, at Engelhard Corp., will become a member of the AlliedSignal Corporate Executive Council and, pending board of directors approval, an officer of the company.

W.R. Grace and Co. Names Norris President

The parent company of Grace Division, W.R. Grace and Company of Columbia, MD, has named Paul J. Norris president and CEO. Norris, who was formerly senior vice president at AlliedSignal, will lead Grace’s continued global growth, according to Albert Costello, current chairman of the company.


Cindy Rowe Honored as Outstanding Communicator

Cindy Rowe, founder and owner of Cindy Rowe Auto Glass of Harrisburg, PA, has been named Communicator of the Year for 1998 by the International Association of Business Communicators/ Harrisburg Chapter. According to the association, the competition’s judges selected Rowe because of her ability to transform her company into a ten location chain and because she serves as the talent in her company’s broadcast advertising.


Horvath and Matthews Join Duncan

Duncan Systems, Inc. of Elkhart, IN, has announced the appointment of Ken Horvath as vice president, chief financial officer and Carolyn E. Matthews as vice president, call center manager. Horvath will oversee all financial reporting, cash management and insurance functions, while Matthews will supervise a staff of more than 20 customer service representatives and will work to develop and refine the customer service program.

The company also has confirmed that marketing manager Mike Eberle has left to pursue other opportunities. Garry Fileccia of Elkhart Products in Elkhart, IN, has assumed Eberle’s position.


Windsor Announces New President; Announces Management Promotions

Windsor Window Company of Des Moines, IA, has appointed division vice-president John Smit as its new vice president and promoted two local managers to national positions. Smit, who will oversee Windsor’s entire window division, has been with the company since 1989.

The company also promoted Jeff Jones, who also joined the company in 1989, to vice president of sales and marketing. Kristine Winter, who joined the company’s Iowa plant as marketing specialist in 1995, will serve as its marketing communications manager.
