NFPA Issues Performance-Based Codes; Harmonizes Fire Codes

The standards council of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has released the 2000 edition of NFPA 101®, Life Safety Code®. According to NFPA, the manual fully incorporates a performance-based approach to fire and life safety. NFPA expects this approach to offer architects, building and fire code officials, fire departments and building owners opportunities to implement progressive approaches to fire protection.

NFPA has also joined with the Western Fire Chiefs Association (WFCA) to develop a harmonized fire code integrating NFPA 1, Fire Prevention Code®, and the Uniform Fire Code. The two associations will work together to produce a fire code compliant with the American National Standards Institute. Both NFPA and WFCA have existing agreements with the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAMPO), publisher of mechanical and plumbing codes.

“Together, NFPA, WFCA, and IAMPO can achieve what none of our organizations could alone,” said NFPA President George D. Miller. “ ... My ultimate hope is to collaboratively work toward the development of the nation’s premier, integrated set of codes for the fire and building industry.”

The harmonized fire code is expected to be released in 2003.
