When It All
Comes Together

Glass industry professionals took in two New England days of the latest information,
educational opportunities and ... a wedding!

Exhibitors came from as far north as Mississauga, Ontario, and as far west as Portland, Ore., to take part in Glass Forum 2000 in Manchester, N.H. Held April 7-8 at the Center of New Hampshire and Holiday Inn, Glass Forum hails as the only northern New England event dedicated to the networking and education of those in the glass and metal industry.

“Glass Forum is the glass show for northern New England,” said Tom Parsons, Glass Association of New Hampshire president. “It is an excellent educational opportunity, and allows companies to put faces with voices, and share good times with competitors,” he added.

Co-sponsored by the Maine Glass Dealers Association, the Glass Association of New Hampshire and USGlass magazine, the two-day event offered informative and educational opportunities with a selection of seminars and trade show activities, mingled with just the right amount of entertainment, because, after all, it was a business trip.

Off With a Bang

No stranger to glass expos, Jerry Wright, motivational speaker and president/owner of AAA Glass Mirror in Fort Worth, Texas, started the show off Friday with his keynote address, “Hire Slow … Fire Fast,” sponsored by Sigco Inc. “To attract and keep good people, you must have something to offer them,” Wright said. He provided attendees with essential hiring components, such as interview questions and screening procedures employers need to pinpoint the right job candidate.

A Little of This, a Little of That

Despite lingering rain clouds, snowflakes that flurried the day before and the televised Masters Tournament, nearly 50 exhibitors took part in Glass Forum 2000.

Several companies welcomed Glass Forum as a chance to introduce new merchandise. “Since our show is in the spring, it provides a great opportunity to display new products,” said Parsons.

The booth for Los Angeles-based C.R. Laurence Co. (CRL) featured one of its latest products, the RoboVector, (circle card #102) which is a five beam, all-in-one, plumb bob and level. The RoboVector has a single piece, diamond cut beam splitter that, according to CRL, guarantees perpendicularity of all five beams, and preserves accuracy. The product is ideal for shower door installations as well as square foundation walls and window frames.

Just a few steps away, information on a new automatic door system was available from Door Control of Hookset, N.H., a distributor for Horton Automatics. The company’s new line, the 2003 series, works with the Apex Sliding Door Sensor System and features a digital microprocessor with more than 60 programmable parameters.

Not to be forgotten, several companies representing the auto glass industry were also presenting their wares at Glass Forum. Glass Medic of Worthington, Ohio, was on hand touting its new and improved company and products. “We are now custom making all of our products,” said general manager Paul Syfko. “Everything will be researched and developed in-house for specific applications.” Two new resins, one for pit repair and one for crack repair, are among the company’s updated lines. Syfko also praised the show as a good opportunity to meet some of his customers from the New England area.

Don White, Shat R Proof regional sales manager, exhibited his company’s Water Repellent Coating, which treats glass chemically, causing water to bead and roll off. “Forum drew a good crowd from primarily the flat glass side of the industry,” he said. “I spoke with several end-users who were looking for product information, as well as others who made purchasing decisions for their shops and distribution facilities.”


Listen and Learn

Both show days were filled with numerous educational programs sponsored by Solar Seal of South Easton, Mass. Topics covered included Construction Sealants, led by Fred Smith of Tremco; Updates in the Auto Glass Industry, by Ed Fennell from Bartelstone Glass Distributors; Proper Mirror Installation Techniques, by John Martin from Sommer & Maca; Shower Door Installation by Doug DeRusha from CRL; and Estimating ASAP by Tom Minnion of U.S. Aluminum.


That’s Amoré

Karas & Karas Glass Co. of South Boston, Mass., provided the evening’s entertainment, sponsoring the interactive event, Joey and Maria’s Wedding, a haywire, Italian wedding that puts the Godfather to shame. As guests at the wedding, those in attendance took part, witnessing first hand the couples’ satirical wedded bliss, including the bride’s womanizing father, the black-veiled, groom-disapproving grandmother and, of course, the ever so heart-broken ex-girlfriend. Guests enjoyed the evening complete with a four-course meal and loads of laughter, as most every guest fell victim to at least one of the wedding party’s antics. “I have been traveling consistently since February, and it was refreshing to attend a show that was productive and enjoyable,” said White. “Joey and Maria’s Wedding was a nice distraction from the hassles of travel.”

 A Close Finish

After attendees and exhibitors enjoyed mid-afternoon snacks sponsored by Auto Glass Wholesale (AGW), it was off to the races, the belt sander races that is. For the fourth year the International Belt Sander Drag Race Association (IBDA) sponsored belt sander races which took place Saturday afternoon. After racing down a 30-foot track on an unaltered store-bought sanding belt, Bill Brodie from Classic Glass in Woburn, Mass., took home the first place award for the second consecutive year. Ellery Dean of Minuteman Tools in Exeter, N.H., claimed second place.

In addition, the two qualifiers in the USGlass truck contest were Mike Cook of Accent Glass Inc. from Hudson, N.H., and Ted Albert of Country Glass from Litchfield, Maine. One name from ten finalists will be drawn the last day of Glass Expo Midwest 2000, in Chicago.

The “workhorse area of the industry” welcomes glass and metal professionals back for the 2001 show, scheduled to take place in January 2001.


Hats Off To…

 While many industry professionals took in Glass Forum 2000, and walked away with a bundle of the latest company and product information, two in attendance took home a bit more. The Saturday night cocktail party, sponsored by Pilkington LOF, saw the presentation of two awards to exceptional glass industry members.

The New Hampshire Glass Association Dealer of the Year award was presented to Allen E. Van Hoogan of Monadnock Glass by Tom Parsons, the current association president. In September 1998, a fire burned down Van Hoogans glass shop, which he and his staff rebuilt by late December. “We never went out of business,” he said. “We rented job trailers and storage trailers and temporary electrical and phone services were hooked up so we could continue working.”

Van Hoogan began in the industry in 1980, and admits he was very surprised at winning the award. “After I won, everyone, including my wife, told me they knew, but I didn’t know.”

Ernie Russell, president of Window Reps of Maine, was recognized by the Maine Glass Dealers Association with the Dealer of the Year Award. Janet Parkhurst, a past president of the Maine Glass Dealer Association, presented Russell the award for his many years of industry service. Russell has worked in the glass profession since 1983, and his company serves as a distributor for the glass industry, providing such products as windows and vinyl siding. In addition, the company supplies storefronts, exclusive to glass shops.
