Columnist Perilstein Welcomes Newborn Son

1Max Perilstein, a USGlass columnist who hails from PDC Glass of Plymouth, Mich., and his wife, Beth, recently welcomed a new son into the world, Zachary Chance. Max had discussed naming his new son in his January 2001 column (see January 2001 USGlass, page 12). 
Zachary was born on October 25, 2000, and was welcomed by his parents and sister, Natalie, who entered the world just 13 months ahead of her brother.

Wausau Names New VP of Operations; Director of Quality Assurance

Wausau Window and Wall Systems has named Tom Barnes to the position of vice president of operations. In his new position, Barnes will be responsible for overseeing company operations for all five of Wausau’s facilities. Most recently, Barnes se2rved as vice president and general manager of Pointe Precision, a machined parts manufacturer in Stevens Point, Wis. He holds a bachelor of science degree from Clarion University and an M.B.A. from Gannon University.
In addition, Doug Holmberg was also named Wausau’s new director of quality assurance. Holmberg will be leading the company’s Six Sigma Quality Initiative. With more than 20 years of experience with Wausau, Holmberg joined the Wausau, Wis.-based company after earning his bachelor of science from Michigan Technological University.

After 29 years in the glazing and metal industry, J.D. Williams, U.S. Aluminum’s executive vice president, commercial products group began his retirement February 21, 2001.
Q. Why did you pick now to retire?
I always wanted to retire around the age of 62—while I was still young enough and healthy enough so that I could still do my favorite hobbies—scuba diving, jogging and staying physically fit. There was just a lot I wanted to do while my health was still good.
Tell me about how your interest in scuba diving.
I’ve been diving off and on since 1960. My wife and I go out on dives, and I enjoy underwater archeological searches. I have an underwater metal detector, and I’ve found three Spanish galleons off the East Coast of Mexico that I enjoy diving over. The one place I’d really like to dive is Turk Island, which is in the South Pacific—that’s where half of the Japanese fleet of World War II sunk. 
Q. Is there any particular aspect of the glazing and metal industry you like most of all?
I enjoyed sales and product development. I enjoyed being involved, and I loved being in contact with the customers. It seems the higher you go in management the harder it is to spend time with the customers, and that is very important.
Q. If you could change the industry, what would you do?
We are sadly lacking when it comes to training new people in this industry. We need some sort of forum so new people can learn about how the industry is changing. 
Education is also lacking. We need to provide more education so that more can learn the trade, and also develop methods to get younger people to want to come into this field, get them interested so we can train them to move up and advance. 
Q. What do you think the biggest industry changes have been in 29 years?
One of the biggest evolutions that has put new life into glass is structural silicone—it gives architects and designers much more freedom, allowing them to use more glass.
Q. Was U.S. Aluminum sad to see you go? 
I can’t speak for others, but I know that I was sad to go. I had been laboring this decision for a long time, and when you work with people for 21 years they become like family. 
Q. Anything you’d like to say to your friends who will be reading this?

Meek Manufacturing of Fort Smith, Ark., has a new plant manager—Jack L. Faulkner. Prior to this position, Faulkner served as plant manager for GenCorp, and he has more than 20 years of supervisory and manufacturing experience. In his new role, Faulkner’s primary task will be to oversee the purchase and installation of new manufacturing equipment and also implement the demand flow manufacturing process.

Consulting Collaborative Names Voreis CEO

Atlanta-based Consulting Collaborative, a new management consulting firm specializing in the construction and building products industry, has named Richard D. Voreis as its chief executive officer. Voreis has held a number of executive positions in the glass and metal industries, including executive vice president of U.S. Aluminum of Waxahachie, Texas, president and chief executive officer of Hebel Building Systems of Atlanta, Ga., and vice president of marketing and sales for the Kawneer Co. of Norcross, Ga.
Voreis says he requested early retirement from Kawneer, where he was responsible for all marketing and sales-related functions, as well as training, research and development and product engineering. At U.S. Aluminum, he was responsible for the commercial products group.

Nabertherm Appoints Nitsche Sales Manager of New West Coast Office

8Nabertherm LLC of New Castle, Del., has opened a west coast sales office in Valencia, Calif. Stefan Nitsche will operate the office as West Coast sales manager. Nitsche is a graduate of the Advanced Technical College in Nuemberg, Germany, where he earned a degree in material science and research engineering, specializing in the fields of ceramics and glass. He has been with the company for three years, during which has served as sales representative.

Gibson Names Basco Regional Sales Manager

7Basco, a shower door manufacturer in Mason, Ohio, has named Bill Gibson regional sales manager. In his new position, Gibson will be responsible for all sales activities in the company’s central region and will manage the company’s independent manufacturer representatives in that region. Prior to joining Basco, he served as regional sales engineer for U.S. Filter.
Gibson is a graduate of Western Michigan University, from which he holds a bachelor of arts degree in industrial marketing. 

George Koch Sons LLC Appoints Cordial to Position of Sales Rep

George Koch Sons LLC of Evansville, Ind., has a new sales representative, Dan Cordial. Previously, Cordial worked for Engineered Finishing Systems of Nobleville, Ind. In his new position, he will represent the company in Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas. Cordial will report directly to Don Miller, regional sales manager for the Western United States.

ATOFINA Chemicals Gains New Sales Rep

The Atoglas Division of ATOFINA Chemicals Inc. of Philadelphia has a new Plexigas® sheet product sales representative, Jeff DuCharme. He will serve as regional sales representative in the New England area. DuCharme comes to ATOFINA from Polygal, where he served as East Coast sales manager.

Spec-Temp Outside Sales Team Grows

Junker Named National Sales Manager for Hardware Technologies

4Fort Atkinson, Wis.-based Hardware Technologies Inc. has named Patrick J. Junker its new national sales manager. Junker brings to the company more than 15 years of experience in the window and door hardware field, including ten years with the Amesbury Group as the director of sales and marketing in the plastic profiles and foam-tite division. 
Prior to joining Hardware Technologies, Junker served as regional sales manager for Dayton Technologies. 

Rossey Appointed to National Sales Manager for CTD Machines

CTD Machines of Los Angeles recently named John Rossey its national sales manager. Rossey has previous experience working with Biesse America and Eckstrom Carlson, and holds degrees in business administration and mechanical engineering. His duties as national sales manager will include working and expanding CTD’s existing distributor network. 


Harmon’s Atlanta Branch Sees New Faces

Minneapolis-based Harmon Inc. has named Robby Sauls to the position of general manager at its Atlanta office, along with Buddy Corn to serve as superintendent, and Chris Lockhart to serve as project manager. Sauls has been with Harmon since 1999 and Corn for more than 15 years. Lockhart worked with Peachtree Protective Coverings previously.


Glastar Executive Dianne Howard Dies

Dianne Howard, a former member of the Chatsworth, Calif.-based Glastar Corp.’s board of directors, died on January 28. Howard introduced the hobby stained glass diamond grinder in 1978 and took over at Glastar in 1999. She entered her most recent position in December 2000.

Former Galesburg Glass President and Owner Dies

Richard Blough, former owner and retired president of Galesburg Glass of Galesburg, Ill., and Davenport, Iowa, and the parent company of C.R. Glass in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Rock Island, Ill., died December 13 at age 68. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Blough served in the Korean War. He is survived by his wife, Ann, a son and five daughters.
