LBL Skysystems Wins Contracts Worth $20 Millioncontractglazing1

LBL Skysystems of Bois-Des-Filion, Quebec, has been awarded two major contracts, which the company says are valued together at approximately $20 million. Accord-ing to Louis Potvin, president and chief operating officer of LBL Skysystems, the two projects bring the company’s backlog to approximately $117 million and “confirm the expertise in the field of curtainwall coverings that LBL Skysystems has developed through the years.”

The first contract, valued at $15.3 million, is for the Harborside Financial Center Plaza 10 located on the Hudson River in Jersey City, N.J. The contract is for curtainwall covering for a 19-story office tower, and is scheduled for completion in 2002. The center’s total surface area is 575,000 square feet.

The second project, valued at $4.5 million, is a subcontract obtained from a Quebec steel manufacturer and consists of erecting curtainwalls around the main access of a multi-story parking facility for Newark International Airport. The latter project is scheduled for completion in 2001.

“The signing of these two contracts contributes to the profitable and organized growth of our operations and further strengthens the enviable position LBL Skysystems has built for itself in the northeastern United States,” said Alain Beaucage, president and chief executive officer. “These contracts are an indication of the company’s leadership in its industry, as well as our ability to create value to our shareholders.”

Flour City International Awarded Contracts for Projects in New York and Florida

Kingsport, Tenn.-based Flour City International has won a $32.3-million contract from the state of New York to provide custom curtainwall systems for a new Bronx Criminal Court complex. Flour City will design, engineer and install approximately 393,000 square feet of custom curtainwall, fabricated from aluminum and accordion-designed glass laminated with polyvinyl butyral for the ten-story courthouse.

“The North American non-residential construction market remains strong as commercial real estate prices escalate and vacancy rates decline to the lowest level of vacancy in six years,” said Edward M. Boyle, Flour City president. “We currently have six projects underway in New York City including the Trump Residential Tower and the historical Lever House.”

In addition, Flour City has also been awarded a $6.1-million contract to provide storefront and curtainwall for a large business tower in the Los Olas section of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Serving as architect for the project is Atlanta-based Cooper Cary. Stiles Construction of Fort Lauderdale is the project manager. Israel Berger Associates is serving as wall consultant.

According to the company’s news release, the new project will be designed specifically to meet the new Southern Florida hurricane loads, which require testing for large and small missile loads. 

GANA’s BEC Division Discusses Possible Committee Projects

At its first technical meeting held February 11, the Glass Association of North America’s (GANA) Building Envelope Contractors (BEC) division discussed possible projects for the group. Conference attendees were surveyed to determine the most important projects, and ranked them on a scale of one to ten, with one being highest priority. The projects were: 
1. Development of an industry contractglazing2
    standard contract qualification document;
2. Development of BEC division 
    project manager educational/
    certification program;
3. Development of a project managers reference manual;
4. Division support of GANA Glazing Manual update; 
5. Update of Fabrication, Erection and Glazing Hours Manual;
6. Update of blueprint reading and labor estimating course.

According to Greg Carney, GANA technical director, the division’s executive committee will be asked to review the survey results and to formulate plans for the development of task groups to address the projects.


ASA Kicks Off New Program

The American Subcont-ractors Association (ASA) has launched a risk management education campaign to help subcontractors learn how to reduce exposure and obtain necessary coverage at reasonable costs. According to information from ASA, objectives of the program includes helping glazing contractors identify strategies that pose an unnecessary risk and negotiate difficult clauses out of insurance agreements.
