PPG Expands Sales and Distribution to Strengthen Coatings Business
In an effort to strengthen its high-performance coatings business, PPG Industries of Pittsburgh is expanding the “size and reach of sales and service, improving local market access and simplifying its product line under a single brand strategy.” 

Howard Combs, director, high-performance coatings, said these changes are in response to customer feedback, which revealed customers wanted not only easier access to PPG’s coatings, but also stronger local market service. He added that PPG coatings are now available through a larger network of company-owned stores and independent dealers throughout North America. He said PPG has “strengthened its product distribution with eight distribution centers throughout the United States and Canada.”

“Local markets now have ready access to our products,” said Combs. “And we are able to provide support through an established team of dedicated, well-trained, high-performance coatings field experts, along with an extensive network of knowledgeable local market representatives operating out of PPG stores and locally based dealers positioned to handle all service requirements.”

Additionally, PPG has established a new identity for its high-performance coatings, and is marketing them under the PPG brand. “With our many coatings company acquisitions over the past few years, we needed to clearly define our position in the marketplace and demonstrate our commitment to high-performance coatings,” said Combs. According to information from PPG, new brand identification clearly defines PPG as the manufacturer of all of its high-performance coatings, while positioning key brands within specific markets. “We are building on PPG’s 100-plus years of coatings expertise, and branching off unique technical capabilities from that base,” added Combs.

In addition, PPG has announced several major role changes within its divisions. Garry Goudy, former head of PPG’s automotive replacement glass business, has taken on the position of vice president for the company’s automotive refinishing business. David Sharick, corporate development vice president, will assume Goudy’s previous position. And Karen Welsh, formerly with glass communications, has taken a role with the architectural coatings segment.

Venture Tape Completes $12 Million Expansion
Based in Rockland, Mass., Venture Tape has recently added 30,000 square feet to its headquarters, creating a 134,500-square-foot facility. Venture says the expansion will be used for adhesive tape manufacturing and storage of production materials and finished goods. The facility will house a new adhesives coating line, which is expected to be operational by the end of the year.

“We are experiencing phenomenal growth,” said Lew Cohen, president of Venture Tape. “The new addition is needed to increase manufacturing capacity and accommodate the growth and expansion of the business both domestically and abroad.”

Diamon-Fusion® International Inc. Announces Several License Agreements
Diamon-Fusion International Inc. (DFI) has granted a temporary license for testing its DFI technology at Vitro Corporativo S.A. de C.V., an affiliate of Grupo Vitro, as part of an agreement to further develop DFI’s technology.

“This new synergy with a company like Vitro … gives DFI and its unique hydrophobic coating not only world class credibility, but a clear recognition of our unique technology,” said Guillermo Seta, executive vice president. 

DFI has also formed an exclusive licensing agreement with American Glass Products Co. (AGP) of Knoxville, Tenn., for an undisclosed amount. The agreement gives AGP exclusivity to the Diamon-Fusion® process, worldwide, in certain specialty niches.
“We are extremely pleased with the decision of AGP to become an international licensee for Diamon-Fusion, and we have no doubt this agreement will benefit both companies in the development of additional foreign markets,” said Seta.

In addition, Our Term Fabricators of West Babylon, N.Y., has signed a 5-year license to apply DFI’s Diamon-Fusion process to its custom-glass products. The license includes exclusivity within Our Terms’ specific niches of the glass industry inside a designated territory. According to a statement from Diamon-Fusion, the agreement was made concurrently with an exclusive sales representation agreement for the tri-state area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. 

CTD Announces New Distribution Center
CTD Machines of Los Angeles has appointed Wm J. Redmond & Son Inc. of Atlanta as the Southeast regional distribution center for its CTD mitre, double-miter and automatic cutoff saws in the Southeast. 

“Our expansion last year let us enhance our workflow and methods in our machining facility, making it easier and less costly to build quality into our saws,” said Tom Orlando, CTD president. “By adding Redmond as a regional distribution center we now have—effectively—an East Coast warehouse.”

In addition, Frameware Inc. of Clifton, N.J., is the new distributor in the Mid-Atlantic states for CTD Machines. According to Frameware’s national sales manager, Dean De Luccia, the move is a logistical expansion into light machinery that complements its customers’ production needs.

Prelco Announces New Plant Construction 
Prelco Inc. of Rivere-du-Loup, Quebec, a manufacturer of specialty glass products for architectural design and industrial applications, has constructed a new 80,000-square-foot plant in Edmundston, New Brunswick. The company predicts the new plant will create 125 jobs over the next three years. The plant equipment includes a new tempering furnace, state-of-the-art cutting, drilling and polishing equipment, an insulating line and a large silkscreen line.

Southwall and Polar Vision Announce Agreement
Southwall Technologies Inc. of Palo Alto, Calif., has announced an agreement that makes Polar Vision of Torrance, Calif., the exclusive North American distributor of Southwall’s electronic display products. According to a news release, Southwall is seeking to expand its display products business beyond its primary market in the Far East. “We are pleased to establish this relationship with Polar Vision,” said Thomas G. Hood, president and chief executive officer of Southwall Technologies. “Polar Vision is a highly respected supplier of display enhancement products and services for electronic displays in the United States. This distributor agreement will significantly improve our exposure and ability to service this important and expanding market for our high-performance optical coatings, particularly for LCD, PDP, OLED and other flat panel displays. 

ThermoView Industries Develops ‘Smart’ Windows 
ThermoView Industries Inc. of Louisville, Ky., has developed a new line of “smart” windows that it plans to manufacture and sell to residential customers in 2002. According to the company, the windows will incorporate suspended-particle-device (SPD) technology that allows users to control the amount of light that passes through the window electrically and instantly. The light-control technology can be regulated manually with a control or automatically by a photocell.

The SPD windows are constructed with low-E glass. ThermoView says they reflect heat, block ultraviolet rays and promote energy efficiency. “We expect these smart windows will offer value to homeowners who want to control light and glare while retaining their picturesque views,” said Charles L. Smith, president.

Spec-Temp Finds Ease and Efficiency with New Equipment

Antwerp, Ohio-based Spec-Temp says that since it added a silkscreen printing and drying system in February 2000, it now finds applying multiple colors and/or electrical conductive lead-free ceramic paints to the glass surface is easier and more efficient than before. 

“We’ve seen a shift in the marketplace toward more value-added glass,” said Dennis Csehi, president and general manager. “Although we’ve always offered excellent glass printing services, this machine eliminates production bottlenecks and has improved our overall capabilities in printing by 30 percent.”

In addition, Spec-Temp also installed a flat tempering furnace in 2000’s first quarter. The company says its capacity for flat glass tempering has increased by 30 percent and the furnace handles high-speed flat tempering/heat strengthening for 3-mm to 12-mm glass thicknesses. 

Zero International Expands Sales Territories; Partners with Brassart Ltd.
Zero International Inc. announced that Door Control Consultants Inc. of Pickerington, Ohio, will represent its product in Northern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania in addition to its territory, which ranges from Eastern and Central Ohio, into the Southwestern part of the state, as well as Northern Kentucky and West Virginia. 

Brassart Zero now offers Brassart’s door fittings and accessories.

Zero also has partnered with Brassart Ltd. of the United Kingdom to make Brassart's door fittings and decorative accessories widely available to the American market.

The marketing agreement makes Zero responsible for U.S. distribution of the entire Brassart line.

Security Lock Expands Las Vegas Facility

Security Lock Security Lock’s new Las Vegas location offers the company more space than its previous site.

Security Lock Distributors, headquartered in Needham Heights, Mass., recently moved its western operations into a building with more than twice the space of its existing locale. “The spacious, free-standing facility enables us to expand our product accessory and option inventory and also permits us to add new lines to service customers needs,” said David Schwartz, Security Lock executive vice president. 

TruSeal Technologies Inc. of Beachwood, Ohio, has entered an agreement with Philadelphia-based Atofina Chemicals Inc. to distribute Atofina’s desiccant beads throughout the United States  … Commercial Sunroom Products (CSP), a division of Patio Enclosures Inc., is now offering PPG’s Comfort-Gard Plus series. CSP tempers the glass at its Macedonia, Ohio, facilities, and distributes it to branches and retailers throughout the United States and Canada.
