A Minute With ...
        Jim Dunstan

Jim Dunstan, who founded Azon USA in 1977, recently passed on his title and role as chief executive officer to company president David Mills (see October USGlass page 72 for related story). Dunstan is confident in the change. “Our company goes beyond stewardship and you have to plan for the years ahead,” he said.

Q: What inspired you to start Azon?

My experience with this business goes back almost to the beginning of pour and debridge thermal barrier technology for aluminum windows in the 1970s. I was with a company that marketed that technology and I saw an opportunity to make the change.

Q: When you first embarked on the launch of Azon, what was the company’s greatest challenge? What is the company’s greatest challenge today?

The biggest challenge was being small. The technology was in its infancy. Today the biggest challenge is staying ahead and being somewhat of a spokesperson for energy efficiency.

Q: In Azon’s Fall 2001 newsletter, you stated “It is not easy to put the company you founded in the care of others.” What was the hardest part about “passing the reigns” on to David Mills? The best part?

It’s quit difficult to give up [parts of the job]. But you have to be confident in your people, the team, to have the capacity and philosophy that the company developed. 

The best part is still having the freedom to do the things I still do. I’m still involved in strategies and I still inject the entrepreneurial spirit. I’m still the patriarch of the company.

Q: What is the one thing you’d like to see Azon do that it has yet to accompolish?

We have products in the marketplace that are somewhat ahead of the time. We want to see those products find their place and eventually they will meet their potential. 

Q: What advice would you offer someone interested in starting his own business?

I think anybody starting a business with the objective that he’ll make a lot of money will most likely fail. We have the philosophy that businesses are started to provide income for the founders and the workers. The business provides products and services that some people will pay for. The business is also a vehicle of creativity to owners and workers. Successful companies are companies that involve a lot of individual creativity. The business also has a responsibility to the community and to give back as it takes away.

Harmon Ltd. Marketing Coordinator Weds
Jennifer Benesh, marketing coordinator for Harmon Ltd., wed Christopher Fink on October 6. The ceremony and reception were held at the Zuhrah Shrine Center in Minneapolis. The couple resides in New Brighton, Minn.


The bride is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Stout, and is responsible for the company’s public, community and media relations. The groom is a regional security specialist for FedEx Ground.

YKK Announces New President and CEO
Junichi (Jay) Takahashi, current president and chief executive officer of Atlanta-based YKK Corp. of America (YCA) has recently been promoted within the YKK Group and is scheduled to return to Japan in late February of 2002. E. Alex Gregory, executive vice president of YCA corporate development, will succeed Takahashi January 1, 2002.

Leclere Named New Bostik Findley Marketing Manager

has recently been promoted to the position of marketing manager for Middleton, Mass.-based Bostik Findley's construction and distribution division. 

Prior to this position, Leclere had served as the company's industrial product manager since January 2001. He also worked for ELF ATOCHEM as a marketing executive and product development manager. He has been with Bostik Findley since 2000.

In his new position, Leclere will oversee all sales and marketing initiatives for the company's industrial, construction and MRO distribution business. He will also supervise product management, technical service and advertising and promotions.

Former PPG Vice President Leggett Dies
Richard B. Leggett, former vice president of flat glass for PPG Industries, died November 21. He was 53.

Leggett joined PPG in 1971 at the Lake Charles, La., chemicals complex, where he subsequently held engineering and operating assignments. In 1981 he moved to Los Angeles as a chemical sales account manager, and later was Cincinnati district sales manager and Houston area sales manager.

Leggett went to Tokyo in 1986 as vice president, chemicals, PPG Far East. He later was vice president, chemicals, PPG Asia/Pacific, and in 1990 was named president, PPG Asia/Pacific. He relocated to Pittsburgh in 1991 as marketing director of chlor-alkali and derivatives.

He was named general manager, flat glass products, in 1995, and appointed vice president of flat glass in 1997. He requested to be relieved of duties in July of last year because of medical reasons.

A native of Mobile, Ala., Leggett received a chemical engineering degree from Auburn University.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret; their two sons, Brian of Beaverton, Ore., and Michael; his mother, Burma Leggett of Mobile, Ala.; a sister, Barbara Gaston of Ashland, Ky.; and a brother, Thomas Albert Leggett of Brent, Ala.

Bob Harbour Passes Away
Robert Roy "Bob" Harbour, formerly of Southwestern Glass & Mirror Co.,of Oklahoma City, died November 13. He was born December 15, 1918 in Oklahoma City, and attended the University of Oklahoma and Louisiana State University. In 1943 he joined the U.S. Army and earned the Bronze Star for his action in Europe. Upon his discharge, he worked for Willard Glass Co., Campbell Glass & Mirror Co. and Southwestern Glass & Mirror Co. He retired in 1985.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ann; a son, Randy and his wife, Patti; and two grandchildren, Joelle and Daniel.

McNeil Joins Gila Distributing
Alan McNeil has recently joined Canton, Ga.-based Gila Distributing, and is now responsible for coordinating purchases and sales in the company's tool division.

McNeil began his career in inventory control, and for the past year handled bids and quotes for Ben Meadows Co. He is also a graduate of Pickens Tech with a specialty in micro-computer technology. 

ADCO Announces New Appointments

has been appointed to the position of business manager for ADCO Products Inc. of Michigan Center, Mich., window assembly systems division. In this position, Braun will be responsible for the company's strategic positioning of products such as insulation, glass adhesives and sealants and the company's line of very high bond strength acrylic tapes.

ADCO has also named Alan Mayr vice president of market and product development. Prior to this position he served as business development manager for the company's window assembly adhesives and sealants division. 

KPotts Keith Potts

ADCO has also named Keith Potts its field technical support manager for its window assembly systems group. In this position Potts will be responsible for supporting ADCO's customer base on behalf of its growing PIB, hot melt, back bedding, desiccant matrix, polysulfide, urethane, silicone and acrylic technologies.

Prior to this position, Potts served as R&D/technical service manager for Rohm & Haas for 14 years. "With the exit of Rohm & Haas from the insulating glass sealant market, we had the opportunity to hire an experienced veteran in the window industry," said Braun. “With his background and expertise, Keith is a natural fit for ADCO."

Pilkington plc Announces Board Appointment; Names New Regional Product Specialists
Effective January 1, 2002, the board of Pilkington plc has announced that Iain Lough will assume the role of group finance director, succeeding Andrew Robb. Robb will remain an executive director with the group.

Lough has been with the company since 1993 as group financial controller. In 1995 he was appointed to the position of head of group finance, and in 1998 took the role of chief financial officer for building products worldwide.

In its North American operation based in Toledo, Ohio, Pilkington has also added three new product specialists who serve as architectural and residential glazing consultants for the glass and architectural industries.

Leslie Peterson, who is based in the Chicago area, covers the Northern and central Midwest states; Tom O'Day, in the Pittsburgh area, covers the Northeast states and the province of Quebec; and Scott Hoover, based in the Atlanta area, covers the Southeast states.

"All three have extensive sales and marketing experience in the building products industry and are valuable resources for architects and specifiers, window manufacturers, glaziers and fabricators," said David Morris, Pilkington North America business segment leader for architectural products.

Brad Barton continues to represent Pilkington North America as the product specialist in the Western United States.

Eric McShane Joins Harmon Inc.

Harmon Inc., based in Golden Valley, Minn., has hired Eric McShane for contract sales in its Baltimore-Washington, D.C., office located in Baltimore. McShane has nearly 15 years of experience in the fenestration industry, serving architects' and general contractors' needs. At Harmon, he will be responsible for project development, contract negotiations and customer relations. 
McShane is a member of the Construction Specifications Institute and is certified as a construction document technologist.

Beatty Joins Denglas Technologies

has joined Denglas Technologies LLC as regional sales manager. Beatty's responsibilities include all sales in the picture-framing industry for the Midwest and Western regions, as well as working with the Denglas distributor network. 

Previously, Beatty worked on marketing and sales programs with Sandel Glass Co. He also served as president of a Bruegger's Bagel Bakery franchise where he developed marketing programs and managed all logistics of the entire operation. In addition, Beatty served as a campaign strategist for U.S. Congressman Pat Roberts during Roberts’ 1992 re-election efforts. He holds a bachelor's degree in communications from the University of Kansas.

Harding Joins IBA's Sarasota Office
Warren Harding has recently joined IBA Consultants' Sarasota, Fla., office as a senior consultant.

Harding has more than 40 years engineering experience, and most recently served as general operations manager for BCI Industries in Tampa, Fla.

"Adding someone with Warren's credentials to our staff is like adding an all-star like Ken Griffey Jr. to your ball club," said Mark Baker, IBA Consultants president. "His exceptional skills and experience will allow IBA to offer unprecedented expertise and service to our Southwest Florida customers."

Morse Industries Announces New Hires
Morse Industries of Kent, Wash., recently announced that Steve Klein has been named a partner with the company. 

Klein has more than 25 years of experience in the marine and architectural glass and glazing industries. His career at Morse began in 1988 when he joined the company as an outside account manager for the Pacific Northwest. After four years, he was promoted to the position of sales manager for the Western United States. He is also a board member and former vice president of the Washington Glass Association.

Morse Industries has also announced three new hires. Andrew Johnson has joined the company as its new marketing coordinator, responsible for promotion, advertising and press activities. Johnson has eight years experience in distribution and high-tech industries. 
Todd Sheppard has joined Morse as an outside account executive for the Northwest. He has six years of sales experience in aerospace and other commercial industries.

The company's new outside account executive for Los Angeles and Ventura counties is Dave Grapperhaus. He has 13 years of sales experience in the textile, real estate, agricultural and high-tech industries.

BOMA Announces Election Results
The Building Owners and Manufacturers Association International (BOMA) recently swore in its 50th president, Sherwood Johnson III. Johnson succeeds Richard D. Baier and will serve the 2001-2002 term. He is a designated broker with CarrAmerica Realty Corp. of Phoenix. 

John P. Kelly, executive vice president of Ryan Companies US Inc. of Minneapolis will serve as vice president and Larry F. Soehren, vice president of Kiemle & Hagood Co. of Spokane, Wash., will serve as president-elect.

Granco Clark President Appointed to AEC Board
Lawrence Difatta, president and chief executive officer of Belding, Mich.-based Granco Clark was elected to the board of directors of the Aluminum Extruders Council (AEC). He will serve a one-year term as supplier director. 

Difatta has been Granco Clark's president since 1992.
