FAIR_02 The fairgrounds in Dusseldorf, Germany, will be the site of glasstec 2002.

The Main Event

Take in Product Developments and German Culture at glasstec 2002
by Ellen Giard Chilcoat

For some in the industry, the words glasstec and Dusseldorf are used synonymously. You’ve probably heard people say, or in fact said yourself, something along the lines of, “We are introducing our newest products at Dusseldorf this year.”

Indeed, the biannual glasstec is without a doubt the glass industry’s largest event, with hundreds of companies showcasing major product, equipment and machinery launches.

Organized by Messe Dusseldorf GmbH, glasstec 2002, the 17th International Trade Fair for Machinery, Equipment, Applications and Products, will again take place at the Dusseldorf fairgrounds, halls nine through 17, in Dusseldorf, Germany, October 28-November 1. Show hours for the five-day event are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

According to statistics from the show’s organizers, glasstec is ranked highly among companies that have participated in it. For example, 97 percent of those attending the 2000 event “rated their participation as successful,” and most exhibitors “praised the quality of visitors and expect busy post-show business.”

Two years ago glasstec set its record with more than 1,024 exhibitors from 41 countries, and 52,000 attendees from 74 countries. This year, in approximately 650,000 square feet of space, show organizers are expecting to surpass those numbers. More than 1,000 companies are already scheduled to take part, and an expected 55,000 visitors will journey to this bi-annual event.

A Worldwide Showcase
In addition to the 314 German-based companies at glasstec, you’ll also find numerous companies from around the globe. According to show officials, approximately half of the exhibitors will be from companies other than Germany. Italy, with 120 companies, is the leading foreign exhibitor, followed by the United States with 41, Great Britain with 38 and France and Belgium, which will each have 34.

Exhibitors at glasstec 2002 will showcase products in a variety of categories including: glass manufacturing and production technology, glass processing and finishing, glass products and applications, tools and replacement parts, measurement, testing and control technology, contracting, consulting and engineering, as well as research, trade associations and trade literature.

Glass Technology Live
In addition to the countless booths to visit and demonstrations to view, a special show and symposium, “Glass Technology Live,” will also be held in halls ten and eleven. According to show organizers, industry experts will “reveal the broad spectrum of forward-thinking applications for all facets of glass.”

The symposium will also focus on glass art and design, which will be highlighted alongside the show’s traditional emphasis, facade and solar technology.
