Guardian Industries Announces Opening of Float Plant in Poland

Guardian Industries Corp. of Auburn Hills, Mich., began production July 18 at its 21st float plant (seven of which are in Europe) with the opening of its newest facility in Czestochowa, Poland. According to Guardian, it is also considering adding state-of-the-art coating operations at the new facility.

“Guardian Industries is meeting current and future customer needs by building world-class plants equipped with the newest technologies,” said James Moore, group vice president and director of European operations. “Guardian’s new plant in Poland will better serve our customers in central Europe.”

Guardian invested 120 million Euro in the Czestochowa facility, which will employ approximately 200 people, run 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week and produce 700 tons of float glass daily. The plant was completed in 13 months and has an electrical substation, natural gas pipeline and a railway connection.

AFG and Asahi Team to Produce Float Glass
Mexican glass maker Vitro and AFG Industries have announced plans to jointly produce float glass toward the end of 2003’s second quarter (see related story in July 2002 USGlass, page 14).
Vitro’s subsidiary, Vitro Plan, will produce the glass with AFG and supply the U.S., Mexican and Canadian markets.

“Our association with AFG will require funds of approximately $90 million (USD). We expect to start restructuring works in the Mexicali plant during the second half of 2002 and first quarter of 2003,” said Josè Domene, general operations vice president.

According to Domene, Vitro is expected to invest nearly $45 million (USD) in the project, as well as $17 million (USD) from a contribution from assets of the Mexicali plant. The remaining $28 million (USD) will come from financing lines or the self-generation of cash flow.

According to a news release, Vitro’s 2002 priority is to reduce debts, which currently total $1.57 billion USD.
