Sargent and McKinney Donate Antimicrobial-Coated Door Hardware to AK Steel Concept Home

Two manufacturers of architectural hardware, Sargent Manufacturing and McKinney Products Co., have donated AgION antimicrobial-coated hardware to the AK Steel concept home in Simi Valley, Calif. The donation included locks, hinges, door closers and overhead doorstops.

“Doors and doorways are high-touch zones throughout the house,” said Alan McCoy, AK Steel vice president for public affairs. “Sargent and McKinney’s donation of AgION antimicrobial-coated door hardware plays a fundamental role in promoting a cleaner home.”

According to AK Steel, high-touch zones in the home will benefit from the AgION antimicrobial compound, which suppresses the growth of microbes. The coating is also said to be fingerprint-resistant.

“We see this quickly becoming the new standard in architectural hardware,” said Leslie Saunders, director of partner relations for Sargent. “Consumers are becoming more aware of bacteria on door handles and other contact surfaces.”

The AK Steel concept home, which is under construction currently, is being built utilizing the AgION coating from AK Coatings Inc. and steel construction products including framing members, roofing materials and handrails, as well as other items.

GSA Recognized with Safety Award
The General Services Administration (GSA) was recognized with a Protecting People First Foundation (PPFF) Safety Award on April 24 at the opening ceremony of the PPFF symposium. Presented by Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry and PPFF founder Aren Almon-Kok, GSA’s award for installing blast-resistant windows in the new Oklahoma City Federal Building was awarded by Dow Corning, Masonry Arts, Solutia and Viracon—the collaborative effort that developed the window system used by the GSA for the new building. The windows are similar to those installed in the Pentagon.

The building’s window system, which was designed and installed by Masonry Arts of Bessemer, Ala., contained specially designed laminated glazing manufactured by Viracon of Owatonna, Minn., a protective interlayer manufactured by St. Louis-based Solutia Inc. and a sealant provided by Dow Corning of Midland, Mich.

During the PPFF symposium that gathered members of the protective glazing community ranging from architects to film applicators, numerous presentations and roundtable discussions were presented about the hazards of flying glass and the ways to protect buildings and the people that inhabit them from such dangers.

“We live in a different world where threats of terrorist attacks play a regular role in our lives. I hope our technology is never called into action again—but if it is, I’m certain that it will save lives,” said Brad Austin, vice president of sales and marketing for Viracon.

In acceptance of the award, GSA property development director Leonard Murphy expressed excitement about protective glazing technologies, saying to ceremony attendees, “We’re not going to build a bunker. We’re going to make a building that’s open, inviting and safe.”

The ceremony took place in conjunction with the PPFF’s “Defending our Freedom, A Life-Saving Symposium,” on the eighth anniversary of the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building.
