Guardian Industries Plans to Add Glass Coater to Plant in DeWitt, Iowa

Guardian Industries of Auburn Hills, Mich., has announced plans to build a glass coater at its float glass plant in DeWitt, Iowa. Guardian expects to invest up to $40 million for the high-volume production coating facility, which will also feature research and development capabilities.

“Guardian is committed to making products for independent fabricators that will strengthen their market presence,” said Russ Ebeid, the company’s glass group president. “We are doing that through innovation and growth. Our DeWitt plant is joining a growing stable of state-of-the-art coating facilities in North America and Europe.”

According to Guardian, the new coater, expected to begin early production in the second half of 2004, will increase residential and commercial coating capacity in the upper Midwest. The company says the coater will also provide a venue to develop and test new products, increasing product durability while streamlining manufacturing processes. Currently, the plant produces float glass, tempered products and mirrors.

“Our strategy is to manufacture high-volume coated products while testing and producing products not currently available in the marketplace,” said DeWitt plant manager Pat Tuttle. “By creating dialogue or synergy between development, production and end-user personnel we are letting the scientists out of the lab and into a fully functioning manufacturing environment.”

AEC Publishes 2002 Extrusion Shipment Survey Results
The Aluminum Extruders Council (AEC) of Wauconda, Ill., has published the results of its 2002 extrusion shipment survey. The survey was conducted jointly by the AEC and the Aluminum Association for what the AEC calls a “more accurate account of aluminum extrusion shipment.” Members of both associations report their shipments to an independent market research firm.

The survey is designed to provide participants’ data on 2002 shipments, as well as participants’ data since 1997. The survey, according to AEC, computes and summarizes changes within different market segments: building and construction; transportation; consumer durable goods; electric machinery and equipment; distributors and jobbers; exports; and others.

Fifty-one participants took part in the 2002 survey. Combined, their shipments were slightly less than 3.3 billion pounds. Building and construction was the largest segment at 34.5 percent. The segment also reported approximately 1.3 billion pounds of shipments; primary doors and windows dominated the category.

The second largest segment was transportation (24.7 percent), followed by distributor/jobber at 18.3 percent.
