Adhesives Research Warehouse in Pennsylvania Damaged by Fire

On January 10, a fire occurred at an Adhesives Research (AR) solvent and chemical warehouse in Glen Rock, Pa. All AR associates were evacuated safely and there were no injuries. Four firefighters were taken to the hospital, but no serious injuries to emergency responders were reported. AR stated it was in the process of assessing possible damage to adjacent areas and was working with local officials to determine the fire’s cause.

According to a statement from AR, the fire damage was contained to a storage warehouse that had been designed with firewalls and exterior pressure release walls to manage and contain such fires.

At press time the company was in the process of resuming “business as usual.” AR’s sales, customer service, IT, finance and purchasing functions were being run from a nearby satellite office, while the R&D and quality groups, as well as management and engineering were back on site. The company had also resumed shipping products and receiving raw materials, though some raw materials were being diverted to alternate storage locations.

USGBC Announces Upgrades to LEED Process

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has introduced what it calls “major process improvements” to its Leadership in Energy & Environmen-tal Design (LEED) green building rating system.

The revisions include a streamlined documentation and certification process that is done online completely. USGBC says, the changes make the process user-friendlier without diminishing technical rigor and quality. The credit requirements themselves do not change and project teams still have to verify their achievements through third-party validation and ensure the building is built as it was designed.

Other changes include the option for project teams to submit documentation in two phases for new construction projects, the design phase and the construction phase.
