J.E. Berkowitz L.P. Breaks Ground on New Facility in New Jersey

To meet its ambitious growth plan, J.E. Berkowitz L.P. broke ground June 20 to begin construction on its new 200,000-square-foot plant and offices at the Gateway Business Park in Pedricktown, N.J. Construction is expected to be complete in April 2007, and J.E. Berkowitz L.P. will be the first company to occupy the business park. The new facility will be on 22.4 acres. 

“We are the pioneers at this business park, and we are thrilled to be staying in the state of New Jersey. Although we didn’t want to leave Westville—our home for 36 years—we had no ability to expand further in the current location,” said Arthur Berkowitz, president. “The new site has immediate access to the interstate and is across the road from a private airport.” 

Under the direction of Arthur Berkowitz, Robert E. Price, director of sales, and Michael Z. Nicklas, architectural sales and marketing manager, the company had sales of more than $40 million in 2005, and expects even more growth in 2006 and beyond. To accomplish this growth plan, J.E. Berkowitz has purchased new equipment, including a large laminating line to produce laminated glass for hurricane codes and other high safety areas. 

The plant and offices were designed by Margulies Hoelzli Architecture of New York City, engineered by the Thornton Tomasetti Group of New York City and will be constructed by Norwood Construction Management of Allentown, Pa. The layout of the buildings will incorporate some of the best practices found within some of the major glass fabrication plants in Europe. In fact, J.E. Berkowitz L.P. executives traveled to these sites last year to gain knowledge for the planned expansion. According to Edwin Berkowitz, chairman, the total investment in construction, land and new equipment will approach $25 million.

“We expect to produce 50 percent more at the new plant. To give you an idea of how far we’ve come, we produce in half a day today what we produced in a year 50 years ago,” said Edwin Berkowitz. 

J.E. Berkowitz L.P. currently employs 220 employees and plans to hire more workers when the new plant and offices are completed. 

“As the demand for high quality precision glass products evolves, J.E. Berkowitz L.P. is making the commitment to meet that consumer need,” said Robert E. Price, director of sales. “By committing to building a state-of-the-art plant and offices at Gateway Business Park, we are staying the course on our strategic business growth plan.”

Founded 86 years ago in Philadelphia by Jacob E. Berkowitz, the family-owned and operated company specializes in the architectural glass market, both for domestic and export accounts. 

PPG Flat Glass Becomes PPG Performance Glazings

PPG Industries Inc., headquartered in Pittsburgh, has announced that its strategic business unit formerly known as PPG Flat Glass has been renamed PPG Performance Glazings. Mark J. Orcutt, vice president of PPG Performance Glazings, said the name change reflects the company’s focus on value-added products and services, such as Solarban® 60 glass and the family of PPG Certified Fabricator™ Programs, which now generate a majority of the business unit’s revenue.

“Our business continues to evolve to meet the needs of the residential, architectural and specialty glass markets. The goal—as “performance glazings” implies—is to help our customers enhance the performance and value of their products,” he said.

Arch Continues Growth Within Guardian Certification Programs 

At its national sales meeting in South Florida, which took place in early June, Arch Aluminum & Glass confirmed plans to expand its value-added product and service offerings for the commercial market by selecting Guardian’s Sun-Guard® Commercial Glass products as the cornerstone of its growth initiative.

“We selected Guardian because it has the most comprehensive product offering in the industry,” said Steve Perilstein, Arch’s vice president of sales. “We currently have eight facilities that run Guardian’s SN-68 commercial low-E product, with plans to bring all of our locations on board in the near future. We feel this product is the best in its class and with the other nine high-performance coated products in the Sun-Guard series, our customers will have the ability to optimize energy savings, daylighting and aesthetics like never before.”
With 150 people in attendance, the sales meeting also covered the future expansion of their extrusion operation, information on new equipment additions and updates on future locations and acquisitions.

Truseal Redesigns Logo for Corporate Branding Initiative

Truseal Technologies Inc. of Beachwood, Ohio, revealed a new logo as the centerpiece of a revitalized company branding initiative centering on its efficiency and technological leadership. 

The company says the new logo features the abstract representations of glass lites shown in a round mark as a nod to Truseal’s core windows focus. The mark also suggests a “T” or an umbrella, depending on the viewer’s interpretation. The red color was chosen for its sense of warmth, assertiveness and freshness.

Pulp Studio to Provide Flooring for U.S. Visitor Center

Los Angeles-based Pulp Studio has been selected as the supplier and fabricator for the specialty glass flooring to be used in the new United States Capital Visitor Center in Washington, D.C. 

Installation of the floor system, which is roughly 6,500 square feet, began this month and should be completed within three months.

DuPont and Viracon Present Award to GSA 

The Protecting People First Foundation (PPFF), on behalf of DuPont and Viracon Inc., presented its Safety Award to the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) for its investment in lifesaving protective glass technology in the Wilkie D. Ferguson, Jr. United States Courthouse, in Miami at a presentation on May 11.
The award recognizes projects that “raise awareness of the hazard of flying glass, most deadly in terrorist bombings and natural disasters.” 

“We take very seriously our responsibility to construct government buildings and facilities that provide a safe environment for employees, as well as the public,” said Edwin E. Fielder, Jr., regional administrator of GSA’s Southeast Sunbelt Regional Office.
DuPont Glass Laminating Solutions supplied Butacite® and SentryGlas® Plus laminated glass interlayers to glass fabricator Viracon Inc. for the courthouse project. 

United States Aluminum to Add New Service Center

United States Aluminum of Waxahachie, Texas, has announced plans to add a service center in the Phoenix area.

This new 24,000-square-foot service center will be operational next month and will stock entrance and storefront systems.
“Having a service center in the Phoenix area will allow us to service our customers in a more personal manner and meet the demands of this fast growing market,” said Clark Folsom, marketing manager for the company.
