Something to Celebrate
GANA Plans BEC Conference’s 10th Anniversary
by Ashley M. Charest

Final preparations are being made for the upcoming GANA Building Envelope Contractors (BEC) Conference, and this edition marks a big milestone for the event: its tenth anniversary. Let’s look back at the past ten years and how the conference has grown to today’s success.

A Strong Start
In February 1998, 104 individuals from the contract glazing industry sat together for what was then called the First Annual Contract Glazing Conference. Some of the topics from the 1998 event included challenges of a monumental project, NFRC certification of curtainwalls, keys to successful mock-up and testing, contract glazing in the 21st century, whether glazing consultants are friend, foe or both and common concerns of the glazing contractor.

The momentum over the next few conferences continued to increase. In terms of attendance, the conference climbed to 113 attendees in 1999, and then nearly doubled in size in 2000 with 205 attendees.

Going Strong
Today the BEC Conference is known as “The” event to attend for glazing contractors and their suppliers. Customers and suppliers have the opportunity to network in Las Vegas while receiving quality education and information about new trends, opportunities and challenges. This mix of education, networking and the Vegas backdrop has been powerful for the contract glazing industry.

Moving through the early 21st century, the conference continued to grow in 2001 with 254 attendees, up in 2002 and 2003 with 264 attendees, 2004 with 289 attendees, 2005 with 320 attendees and growing yet again with the most recent 2006 event, which attracted 420 attendees.

For the tenth anniversary of the BEC Conference, GANA has made plans to accommodate almost 600 leaders in the industry, including you. The conference has moved to the new (and larger) Planet Hollywood, a Sheraton resort (formerly the Aladdin Resort and Casino). Our program structure remains consistent with industry needs and expectations and GANA is committed to providing education that enhances our members’ everyday businesses.

A Sneak Peek
On Sunday, March 4, we’ll kick-off the conference with the BEC division technical committee meeting, followed by a welcome reception. The next day we head into our full-day general session with keynote speaker Garrison Wynn, who will present The Truth About Success: Being the Best vs. Being Consistently Chosen.

Following an informative morning, the program introduces a change for the BEC Conference. For the tenth anniversary conference, we’ve created two break-out sessions instead of one large general session, which will allow attendees to participate in interactive discussions more tailored to their interests. During the risk management break-out session, contract glazing management will participate in discussions on contractor insurance, asset management and protection, killer contract clauses and risk management. The alternate break-out session focuses on technology and will include informative sessions on hose-stream testing, thermal requirements and innovations in structural glass wall systems. The attendees reunite for the industry networking reception and silent auction that evening. While networking, attendees will enjoy competitive bidding for a variety of auction items donated by GANA members, with all proceeds going to the new scholarship program from the GANA Educational Foundation.

The final day includes a half-day general session, led by former four-time Super Bowl winner Rocky Bleier from the Pittsburgh Steelers, who will present on Being the Best You Can Be. Closing out the conference is the annual golf tournament.
