The Alto Restaurant
Walker Textures acid-etched glass and mirror products from Walker Glass Co. Ltd. in Montreal were used in the Alto Restaurant project, located at 11 East 53rd Street in the heart of midtown Manhattan. Vicente Wolf Associates Inc. designed the restaurant’s décor, which showcases decorative glass and mirror. Wolf, who is also a partner in Alto, was inducted into the Designer Hall of Fame in 1998.
Walker Textures acid-etched glass and mirror can be found in three different applications within the restaurant. The floor on the second level was made with three layers of 12-mm clear laminated glass with the walking surface made of acid-etched clear glass satin 1 face, to provide the impression of “walking on clouds.”
The dividing walls for the private salons on the second level also feature 12-mm, acid-etched clear glass satin 1 face tempered glass. Here, the glass creates a translucent appearance that also obscures the view while still maintaining a high level of light transmittance.
The third application features 6-mm acid-etched clear mirror satin 1 face as a wall covering for the staircase. These mirrors absorb light and reduce the glare adding depth to the glass.
