System Made to be Air-Tight and Impact-Resistant
Pompano Beach, Fla.-based Glasslam N.G.I. Inc.’s Air-Tight Sudden Impact IG System was designed to help window companies and glass fabricators to produce insulating glass that meets tough hurricane impact codes quickly and efficiently. The patent-pending Sudden Impact IG System features a layer of crystal clear resin that is applied with a proprietary process, bonding one interior glass surface with the Air-Tight Spacer, rapidly creating a hurricane impact unit containing only two lites of glass. www.glasslam.com

Energy-Efficient and Ready to Resist Impacts
EFCO, a Pella Co., in Monett, Mo., has unveiled its new Series 526 thermal impact storefront.

Designed to accommodate 1 5⁄16-inch insulating glass units for enhanced U-values, the Series 526 incorporates the use of a polyurethane thermal barrier that enhances the frame’s CRF values. Dry-glazed interior and exterior gaskets eliminates the usage of any structural silicone sealants, and provides enhanced thermal performance by ensuring a high-quality weather seal. Series 526 also utilizes screw-spline frame construction for decreased shop fabrication labor. In addition, the Series 526 meets large- and small-missile impact standards and can be used with a variety of EFCO entrance packages. www.efcocorp.com

Mirox 3G Makes for an Ecological Mirror

Engrave Tempered Glass Without Shattering
Tempered glass can now be engraved on-site, according to Glass Craft USA in Norcross, Ga. The company says its portable engraving system can etch, engrave or otherwise decorate tempered glass without shattering the glass or compromising its safety characteristics. Using portable machinery, the new service can engrave designs onto all types of glass deeper than is normally possible. This deep-cut etching allows the engraved design to be painted using traditional artists’ techniques and modern airbrushing and spraying methods. If done on-site, turnaround is about five days. www.glasscraftusa.com

GANA Puts Videos on DVD and Publishes Three New Glass Informational Bulletins
Three Glass Association of North America (GANA)-produced videos on the creation of various types of commercial architectural glass are now for sale on DVD. The videos are:

  • The Float Glass Manufacturing Process (produced by the Flat Glass Manufacturing Division • How Mirrors Are Made (produced by the Mirror Division)
  • How Laminated Glass Is Made with PVB (produced by the Laminating Division.) The videos may all be seen in their entirety for free on the GANA website at www.glasswebsite.com/video.

Work is being done on more videos, which are produced in-house by GANA staff in conjunction with each division. Current videos in production include one on insulating glass units, a video featuring tempered glass and additional laminating videos featuring other interlayer technologies.

In addition, the association has released several new Glass Informational Bulletins (GIBs).

Quench Patterns in Heat-Treated Architectural Glass, GANA’s 18th GIB, defines quench (sometimes called “strain”) patterns, and the conditions that may create them. Importance of Fabrication Prior to Heat Treatment encourages the industry to complete any fabrication, including cutting, drilling holes, sandblasting, etching, etc., prior to heat treatment of the glass. Glass Floors and Stairs takes a close look at considerations for glaziers and designers when implementing a glass floor or staircase. Each of the educational documents are available to the industry as a free download on GANA’s website. www.glasswebsite.com

CRL Introduces Hand Rails Online
Los Angeles-based C.R. Laurence Co. Inc. (CRL) has introduced a new web-based design program for material sizing. Hand Rails Online is design and layout software that is tailored to professionals working with handrails, guardrails, glass balustrades, stair rails, and windscreens. It generates railing layouts, parts lists and material cut sizes. After railing layout dimensions for a particular job are entered, the program calculates the stock lengths of material and all the hardware required to complete the project. The software can generate a quote sheet and layout drawings for prospective customers. The company offers live technical support to help learn the process, as well as online webinars. www.crlaurence.com
