The Latest Offerings in Glass Processing Machinery and Equipment

DIP-Tech Offers Printers for Varying Production Runs
Israel-based DIP-Tech developed the GlassJet digital printer that uses proprietary inks for small-to-medium print runs, to let designers and architects create a variety of applications. Digital file features enable tiling/paneling projects, rotating, mirroring and determining the image opacity and color intensity. GlassJet can streamline job logistics by using variable data, such as logos, serial numbers, manufacture dates and sequence numbering. The software allows for the loading and printing of multiple lites or separate jobs simultaneously. All GlassJets can be used with an adapting table to produce multiple small lites at a time and can be easily slaved into a broader production process.

The company’s original GlassJet PRO 16PH is a flatbed printer suitable for all glass applications. It features a heavy-duty design with 16 Drop-on-Demand (DOD) printing heads that print up to 60 square meters per hour.

The PRO 24PH digital glass printer has 24 DOD print heads and leverages new ink in a wider variety of colors, approaching CMYK printing ability. It can print up to 80 square meters per hour.

For smaller budgets and facilities, the Novo prints on lites up to 2.2 by 1.2 meters while handling up to four colors per panel. It can load from any of its four sides.

The Concertina is Music to Fabricators’ Ears
The Glass Racking Co. in Seattle reports that its Concertina racks for glass factories dramatically reduce the time needed to access glass lites, and that storage areas with Concertina racks require typically 50 percent of the size of traditional A-frame storage systems. The Concertina’s storage leaves hold packs of stoche glass. A manual wheel system is used to move the leaves to create space to access specific lites. Glass then can be unloaded from above or from either side. Racks can be designed and built to suit the customer’s glass sizing, weights and volumes, as well as factory layout and positioning of existing equipment and/or processes used.


Sommer & Maca Edges, Washes and Transfers Glass
The VE1P automatic glass edger from the Sommer & Maca Machinery Division of C.R. Laurence in Los Angeles makes a suitable first glass edging machine for any shop. This compact machine uses diamond wheels to produce full profile straight-line edgework on glass from 1/8- to ½-inch thick. Its manufacturer says it edges glass at least four times faster than abrasive belt sanders. New features include a dial indicator positioning system for fast and precise wheel set-up. It operates on standard 110-volt power, and uses no more energy than an upright sander. Additionally, this form of edging uses recirculating coolant, virtually eliminating airborne glass particulate.

The company’s tilting transfer tables transfer glass panels during loading, unloading and processing steps. The new powered tilting ball caster transfer table is available with manual or pneumatic activation of vertical roller toes, a motorized vertical edge roller system and suction cups to hold an insulating glass unit stationary. A two-inch-diameter spherical ball casters allow for lateral transfers without scratching or marking the glass. Fixed-top ball caster transfer tables in different sizes can be supplied with operator inspection or equipment cutouts.


Colonial Saw Introduces New CNC for Metal Fabrication
Colonial Saw in Kingston, Mass., has inaugurated an ALU Ranger vertical CNC machining center. This space-saving CNC machine
is designed specifically for aluminum composite metal (ACM) fabricators, and features user-friendly fabrication software and pre-loaded standard program macros for corner folding, riveting, rout and return and panel hanging designs. It also grooves ACM with a grooving cutter, not a router bit, making it four times faster than traditional CNC machines. A 10-position automatic tool changer allows for drilling, grooving, and cutting in one setup.

Vitrum Building 22, Booth S11: UV Ink Printer Allows for Virtu-ally Any Image
Switzerland-based WP Digital is introducing its latest UV digital printer systems for printing imagery on glass—Virtu RS25 and RS35—together with a modular UV decorative glass cleaning and pre-treatment solution.

The machines have a printing width of 2.5 or 3.5 meters. With its potential to handle the materials up to 50 kilograms per square meter, at thicknesses of 95-mm and at speeds up to 130 square meters per hour, 24 hours per day in an unattended environment, the Virtu RS platform is particularly useful for running large, industrial volumes in strict production timelines. Each machine features 48 print heads and is able to print to a maximum resolution of 1016 by 1200 dpi.

The systems’ open operating interface allows for modification of key parameters during printing. It also provides tools for monitoring production speeds versus the output quality and real-time calculations of the ink consumption per printed job. Together with the active queue system, the company says these features make the Virtu RS printing system easy to operate in long-run production jobs. However, the company reports that its Virtu systems apply the same adhesion, surface tension, color saturation and dot definition for small production batches as well as industrial quantities.

The Virtu RS system features a sturdy steel frame and large, UV-protective windows for monitoring the printing in progress.

Vitrum Building 13, Booth M13 M21 N21: FeneTech’s New Equipment is on the Mark
Aurora, Ohio-based FeneTech is introducing a new laser marking system that marks and identifies any type of glass with tempering or customer logos, trademarks, freely definable text or any other type of information. The glass can be marked either on the edge or in a visible area. Powered by an integrated CO2 laser device, the marking system comes either as a vertical or horizontal conveyor system.

The vertical laser marking system allows for identification of each lite after the breakout table at the cutting stage. At a comfortable working height, the operator can position each lite against a positioning stop onto the conveyor. After confirming the sheet by means of a touch-screen monitor, the automatic laser device marks all necessary and configured information onto the glass in seconds. Each sheet is then automatically indexed on the conveyor to a position where an offloading monitor displays the necessary racking or slotting information to the second operator. The system is controlled by FeneVision software.

Vitrum Building 24, Booth K01: CMS Has CNCs for Many Applications
Whether for fully automated shower door production or to pattern, bevel and engrave, CMS North America in Caledonia, Mich., offers Brembana CNC machines for innovation and product development. The CMS/Brembana fully modular line of vertical flat glass processing equipment can integrate directly with the user’s existing production needs and easily allow for future expansion. Designed to increase output capacity and decrease workforces, each module is connected to a central process controller that monitors functions from loading clean cut glass to stacking finished products.

The company also is now offering automation solutions for complex processes in solar panel and high volume tempering applications to reduce labor needs and materials handling.

Gyrotron Makes Lamination Autoclave-Free
Bensalem, Pa.-based Gyrotron Technology Inc.’s GLS line of autoclave-free glass lamination equipment is now available commercially. The patented technology and equipment provides continuous production of laminated architectural glass and mirrors for a variety of shapes, sizes, coatings and textures. The system can utilize all of the commercially available films but does not employ pressure, making it especially suitable for solar lamination and certain specialty interlayers. Additional benefits include reductions in capital, labor, energy and floor-space costs when compared to conventional systems.


Ceralink Introduces a New Way to Laminate
Troy, N.Y.-based Ceralink Inc. has developed the patent-pending FastFuse™, a new energy saving process for laminating glass and composites using radio frequency (RF) press technology.

The company says the technology requires low capital equipment expense, has low energy costs and has a faster cycle time than current autoclave and vacuum technologies. By using a RF press to heat the bonding interlayer material in the laminate structure selectively, the product can save energy over other technologies on the order of 90 percent, and cycle in minutes instead of hours. 

It can be used in architectural and solar glass applications.

Ceralink currently is seeking to commercialize the technology by packaging this new process with the equipment to sell to the laminating industries. 

The Next Generation of Glass Inspection
Dark Field Technologies in Orange, Conn., has introduced NxtGen™ for glass inspection. NxtGen combines a high-resolution laser system with cost-effective imaging technology. The system inspects glass for defects and washer debris including transparent conductive oxide (TCO) and edge defect detection. It measures lite length, width and squareness, and also features integrated lite warp measurement. Patent-pending variable field scanner delivers sub-pixel detection, while the patent-pending optics derived from laser scanners, utilized in a solid state design with no moving parts, are 100-percent self aligning.

The versatile system was designed to deliver the highest performance at the lowest cost.


Besten’s TAPE MT1500 IG Line Increases Throughput
Besten Equipment Inc. in Solon, Ohio, has introduced its highest throughput automated insulating glass (IG) production line yet. By pairing two applicators in a single line, the new totally automated production equipment (TAPE) MT1500 enables IG fabricators to produce between 1,400 and 1,600 units per shift on a single line—key for fabricators moving toward higher-volume triple-pane IG unit production.

The TAPE MT1500 is capable of bringing IG unit cycle times down to as low as 14 seconds using only five operators. The second spacer applicator on the TAPE MT1500 is the primary driver for increased throughput, although camera squaring technology added to the applicator head also helps. Operators can run the line at full capacity using both applicators or to run the line from either side using a single applicator. The equipment is compatible with Truseal Technologies’ Dura Platform flexible spacer systems.

Glastar’s B15 Sands and Grinds
Glastar Corp. in Chatsworth, Calif., is announcing the addition of its newest product, the B15. The B15 combines a wet belt sander and a disc grinder on the same machine.

The B15 features a strong 1/3 HP motor, easy belt adjustment and is completely plumbed for use with a re-circulating pump or city water supply.
