Dan Shaw’s Redemption

Having tasted victory once before, Dan Shaw, the 2003 Tint-Off champion, returned to the International Window Film Conference, Expo and Tint-Off™ taking third overall at the 2005 event. Window Film magazine caught up with Shaw for a few minutes after the competition.

Q: How long have you been applying window film?
Eight years.

Q: How long have you owned your own business?
Two years.

Q: How’d you get started in the business?
I started off doing it for myself and for friends, then I got on with a shop and went on from there. I was 19 and didn’t have anything to do.

Q: What are the best and worst parts of owning your own shop?
The best part is that I’m accountable for everything. I guess that’s the worst part, too. When you own your own shop, you have to push yourself every day. When I worked for a shop, that was all I had to worry about, going in and doing the job. Now it’s customers, paperwork, overhead … but in the end, it’s mine.

Q: If you weren’t tinting cars for a living, what would you be doing?
Buying and selling real estate.

Q: What are your future plans for your business?

Q: What is your favorite car to tint?
Any car, really.

Q: What is your least favorite car to tint?
Probably the old cars, 10- or 20-year old cars. But they’re all the same.

Q: Did you encounter any obstacles in the Tint-Off, and if so, what were they?
I could have performed better … but the only thing holding you back is yourself.

Q: Will you compete again next year?
Yeah, probably.

Q: How challenging was the tint-off this year—in general and compared to previous years?
This year was pretty competitive. All the champions from the years before were here, and so were some really good tinters.

Favorite place to visit? I like coming out to Florida. That’s nice.
Favorite superhero? The Punisher
Favorite video game system? Playstation 2—but I don’t play many video games.
One word description of yourself? Easygoing.
