Lou’Vull State of Mind
Unless you are from Louisville you probably don’t pronounce the city’s name right. When it was first determined that the 2012 International Window Film Conference and Tint-Off™ would be taking place in Louisville, Kentucky, I immediately started badgering my colleagues to “pronounce it right.”

You see, I am lucky enough to call Louisville my birthplace. I only lived there for a year, but it still holds a special place in my family’s heart and history. We participated in Kentucky Derby parties and bought our share of Louisville Sluggers (which I am pretty sure we still own, all these years later). The town is steeped in family memories and as the youngest of three I was told the stories by my parents and older brothers about Lou’Vall, Tucky.

One particular story has always stuck with me. On our block in Louisville lived triplets, all girls, named Brit, Brooke and Bryce (no, I’m not making this up). The triplets always threatened to release their “wolf” on my brothers if they weren’t nice (the wolf was really a husky, but I digress). When a little bundle of joy named Katie (I’m not biased) was brought home from the hospital my brothers finally had their full deck. “Stay away from our sister,” they threatened the triplets when they tried to come see the new baby.

Why does this story stick with me? Well, it was probably the first and last time my brothers defended my honor (I may have been a bit of a tattletale in my older years). Also, it makes me think about the courage it must have taken for two little boys to threaten the neighborhood mean girls and, most of all, risk the “wolf” being released on them. Louisville is truly a town for the brave.

This is precisely why some of the most talented tinters in our industry will be gathering there September 20-22 to compete for the title of World’s Best Tinter. Find out all the details about the International Window Film Conference and Tint-Off™, including a schedule of seminars and competitions and some tips on things to do while visiting, on page 32.

Speaking of brave competitors, window film played a major role in recent events in London. Find out how window film helps to protect buildings and people in cities that are concerned about terrorism and security. For more on this story see page 38.

Stateside, window film has made huge strides in the state of California and is now included in the California Building Code. What does this mean for window film shops in California and nationwide? How can shops use this news to help educate their customers and grow their business? See the story on page 28 to learn more.

Finally, the tools you use are just as important as the skills you have learned. One type of tool that seems to stand out for installers are cutting tools. Find out about the latest cutting tools on the market and how technology has evolved on page 30.

Oh, in case you were wondering, it is pronounced Lou’vull, not Louie’ville or Louis’ville. We’ll see you in Kentucky!
